Pure nostalgia: special train ride to Interlaken on May 24, 2025!

The fascination of historical train journeys is captivating more and more people in the Karlsruhe region. This type of travel has become particularly popular in recent years, which is also reflected in the extensive offers offered by the Nostalgia Train Travel Association. Sönke diaperschmidt, the head of the working group based in Mülheim an der Ruhr, explains the passion behind the trips: “We organize nostalgic train trips to bring people closer to a piece of history.”

A very special event is coming up on May 24, 2025: The nostalgic train will travel from Mannheim to Interlaken in Switzerland. The train journey offers the option of boarding in Bruchsal, Karlsruhe and Offenburg. The impressive class 103 high-speed locomotive, which was in service in the 1970s, pulls the train. The cars date from the 1980s and were previously used in TEE, InterCity or EuroCity traffic.

Nostalgic features and their fascination

The nostalgic train travel working group, which was founded in 2010, will celebrate its 15th anniversary in 2025. During this time, around 200 trips were organized, with up to 500 passengers taking part in each trip. The net proceeds from the trips go directly to preserving the historic vehicles. None other than the locomotive from the Deutsche Bahn Museum in Koblenz is responsible for the upcoming journey to Interlaken. This special cooperation ensures that historical mobility remains alive.

The upcoming trip on May 24, 2025 is also the only nostalgic trip in the Karlsruhe region for 2025. Further trips are already being planned for next year, which will stop in Karlsruhe again. “Our members, who are part of the hard core of the working group, are mostly professionally active in other areas, but we are united by a passion for railways,” sayswickelschmidt.

An unforgettable travel experience

The trip to Interlaken offers a variety of amenities. Participants can travel in comfortable 1980s cars that have both compartment and open-plan cars. All carriages are air-conditioned and equipped with toilets, and in the 1st class carriages, catering is offered in the dining car. It is recommended to book in advance for breakfast and dinner to enjoy the culinary delights on board.

The train's maximum speed is 200 km/h and the journey takes place via Basel Badischer Bahnhof, where a change of locomotive is necessary due to different train control systems. We then continue via Sissach and the Hauenstein base tunnel to Interlaken Ost. The picturesque town lies between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, surrounded by monumental mountains such as the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau.

The event also includes an optional boat trip, which is already sold out due to high demand on Lake Brienz. For those who still don't want to miss out on the maritime experience, a trip on Lake Thun is offered as an alternative. The price points for these rides vary and bookings can be made both online and over the phone.

The nostalgic trips are not only an exciting adventure, but also an important contribution to preserving railway culture. The Nostalgia Train Travel Working Group is passionate about preserving this tradition for future generations.
