Cheers and tears: Edan Alexander's dramatic release from Gaza!
Edan Alexander, the last living American held by Hamas, was released after more than 580 days in captivity. The release came just before US President Donald Trump's trip to the Middle East and was seen as a "goodwill" gesture to strengthen ties with the US. Alexander was kidnapped in a Hamas attack in southern Israel on October 7, 2023, when a total of around 1,200 people were killed and more than 250 were taken hostage. He is believed to be the first male soldier to escape alive from Hamas hostages since the beginning of the Gaza war.
The release was agreed between Hamas and the US, without Israel's involvement. Alexander was handed over to Red Cross representatives and immediately received medical examinations by the Israeli military. In an initial report, Alexander spoke of torture, handcuffs and inadequate food during his captivity. After his release, he was taken to a clinic for treatment to ensure he received the necessary medical support.
Reactions and geopolitical implications
The Israeli army briefly paused its attacks in the Gaza Strip but plans to expand its military operations. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has rejected an end to the war, called for Hamas to be completely disarmed and made clear that the ceasefire was only temporary. The previous indirect negotiations between Israel and Hamas, mediated by the USA, Egypt and Qatar, have lost momentum. At least 20 living hostages are still in custody in the Gaza Strip.
The Israeli government is facing increasing criticism for seeing Alexander's release as a priority while other hostages may be neglected. What is particularly explosive is the fact that no Palestinian prisoners were released when Alexander was released. The situation in the Gaza Strip is tense, with reports of a catastrophic humanitarian crisis: nearly half a million Palestinians are in a vulnerable situation.
The role of the USA and the upcoming negotiations
The US held direct talks with Hamas to release Alexander, which is controversial. Trump called the release "monumental news" and praised the commitment of Qatar and Egypt. Given the tense situation, negotiations to release more hostages are planned for Tuesday. Netanyahu has announced that he will send a negotiating team to Qatar, while Alexander's family locally hopes that other hostages will also be released.
The health authority, which is controlled by Hamas, reports that over 52,800 Palestinians have been killed in the Gaza Strip so far, further highlighting the dramatic situation on the ground. Experts warn of impending famine in the area, where two million people rely on humanitarian aid.
