Package holidays are on the rise: safety wins over individual adventures!
The world of travel has changed drastically in recent years, especially with the growing demand for package holidays. An unexpected increase in this travel format is occurring worldwide, influenced by various factors such as instability, threats of war and natural disasters. Frequent mass protests have also contributed to the return of package holiday offerings, which were considered outdated ten years ago 112.ua reported.
Since 2021, studies have shown that British travelers' spending on package holidays has been steadily increasing. In May 2023, bookings through travel agencies increased by 11%, while bookings of airline tickets only increased by 3.5%. The main motive behind this development is travelers' need for security and guarantees. At a time when natural disasters, airline strikes and geopolitical conflicts are increasing, package holidays offer effective protection against these risks.
Growing popularity of dynamic packages
The industry has responded to the changes: new companies are offering so-called 'dynamic packages' that combine flights and hotels while maintaining the guarantees of a classic package holiday. This particularly attracts young travelers who previously preferred individualized trips but now benefit from affordable prices and attractive, modern destinations.
The German Travel Association (DRV) takes stock of the 2023 summer travel season and records high holiday demand. The eastern Mediterranean countries, cruises and long-distance trips are particularly popular. For the 2025 summer season, further sales growth of three percent is forecast for tour operators, while the individually self-organized travel market will record a decrease in sales of two percent.
Market developments and forecasts
The overall travel market, which includes both tour operators and individual travelers, will see a one percent increase in revenue, although the number of travelers will decline by two percent, particularly for car-financed trips. Popular budget destinations include Bulgaria, Tunisia, Egypt and Albania, while Spain, Turkey and Greece emerge as the top three destinations for air travel packages.
The highest sales increases in the 2023 summer season can be seen in cruises and long-distance travel with +6% each and in the eastern Mediterranean countries with +5%. A growing last-minute business is focused on medium-haul destinations such as Turkey, Egypt and the Balearic Islands. For the tourism year 2024/25, a sales increase of four percent in the tour operator market and strong sales growth of nine percent in the area of flight package tours for eastern medium-haul destinations are forecast.
Demand for long-distance travel remains strong, particularly in popular destinations such as Thailand, the Dominican Republic, the Maldives and the United Arab Emirates. These trends are the result of extensive analysis based on historical and current booking data as well as economic drivers, such as DRV summarizes.
