Travel warnings for summer 2025: Risks in Egypt and the Mediterranean!
The security situation in the Mediterranean region is causing increased concern among travelers. The Foreign Office has issued travel warnings for several countries on the southern and eastern Mediterranean for the summer of 2025. How echo24.de reports, Egypt, Israel, Lebanon, Syria and Libya are particularly affected by these warnings.
A partial travel warning is in effect for Egypt, warning travelers of terrorist activities and military conflicts in certain regions. These include the north of the Sinai Peninsula, the border area with Israel - with the exception of Taba - and remote parts of the Sahara. Individual trips to the tourist south of Sinai, for example to Sharm el-Sheikh, should only be undertaken in the company of local guides.
Risk areas and safety surveys
The situation in Israel and Lebanon is also described as tense. While both countries are generally travelable, they are classified as risk areas. Travelers must expect possible security questions, denied entry and restrictions. Particularly dangerous are the Gaza Strip, southern Lebanon and the West Bank, which are considered unsafe due to conflict and local tensions.
The situation in Syria remains extremely unstable despite the change of power in December 2024. LGBTIQ people are perceived as particularly at risk in this context. Reports of detention and violence are increasing. In addition, German citizens of Syrian origin have a higher risk of forced recruitment or arrest. The situation in Libya is also worrying, with fragile state structures and a badly damaged health system. The German embassy in Tripoli is closed, meaning consular assistance is only offered from Tunis in exceptional cases.
Global terror threats
The dangers of terrorist attacks and kidnappings continue to exist worldwide, as the Federal Foreign Office makes clear in its security warnings. Terrorist organizations such as “Al Qaeda” and the “Islamic State” are threatening attacks, especially after the most recent acts of terrorism against Israel on October 7, 2023. Although there is no concrete evidence of a threat to German interests abroad, German citizens or institutions could become the target of acts of terrorist violence. Particular attention should be paid to places with symbolic character, economic and tourism centers and large gatherings of people. The degree of threat varies from country to country.
Travelers should be aware of the danger and act safety-conscious. Careful information about the conditions in the country you are traveling to is essential before and during your trip. Following local and international media and reporting suspicious events to the police or security authorities are expressly recommended.
