New Turkey rules: Impatient passengers face penalties!
The Turkish General Directorate of Civil Aviation (SHGM) has recently introduced new safety rules affecting the behavior of passengers on board aircraft. The regulation, which comes into force immediately, applies in particular to the early unfastening and opening of the luggage compartments after landing. Passengers who unfasten their seatbelts or open the luggage compartment before the seatbelt sign goes out will in future be classified as “passengers traveling in violation of the regulations”. This could soon be punished with a fine, although the amount is not yet known.
The main aim of these new safety measures is to prevent disembarkation accidents that may be caused by falling luggage or unexpected movements of the aircraft. The cabin crew has been instructed to issue warnings for violations and to point out that standing up is only permitted after reaching the final parking position. Additionally, crew will point out crowded aisles, requiring passengers to wait their turn to stand up.
Security situation in Turkey
In addition to the new flight rules, travelers to Turkey should also keep an eye on the current security situation, like this Foreign Office informed. There are urgent travel warnings, particularly in Turkey's border areas with Iraq and Syria, especially in the provinces of Şanlıurfa, Mardin, Sırnak and Hakkâri. Political protests may take place in larger cities such as Ankara, Istanbul and Izmir, which may lead to restrictions on public transport.
Travelers must also be aware that security is tight, but there is a general threat of terrorism, which has struck Turkey since 2015. German citizens risk arbitrary arrest or refusal of entry, especially if they are suspected of supporting terrorist organizations or taking part in demonstrations.
