Stricter safety rules when flying: Turkish authorities react!

Turkey's General Directorate of Civil Aviation (SHGM) introduced new air traffic safety rules on May 17, 2025. This regulation aims to increase the safety of passengers on board aircraft. Passengers who unfasten their seat belts or open the luggage compartment before the seatbelt sign goes out will in future be classified as “passengers traveling in violation of the regulations”. The exact penalties for such violations are not yet known, but the implementation of these new regulations is already noticeable.

The cabin crew has been instructed not only to warn people who violate the rules, but also to announce that standing up is not permitted until the aircraft has been parked in its final position. In view of the potential dangers caused by falling luggage or unexpected movements of the aircraft, strict handling of crowded aisles should also be ensured. Turkish Airlines immediately implemented the new safety regulations to ensure the safety of its passengers.

Current safety information for traveling to Turkey

The security situation in Turkey remains tense, particularly in the border areas with Iraq and Syria. There is an urgent travel warning for provinces such as Şanlıurfa, Mardin, Sırnak and Hakkâri. In larger cities such as Ankara, Istanbul and Izmir, political protests may occur, which may result in road closures and local transport cancellations. It also warns that German citizens can be arbitrarily arrested, which can lead to problems, particularly if they are suspected of supporting terrorist organizations such as the PKK or the Gülen movement.

Risks and safety tips

In addition to the above points, the Federal Foreign Office advises caution against pickpockets and fraud, especially in Istanbul. Travelers are advised to keep valuables safe and exercise caution, especially women traveling alone. The general crime rate is low, but there is an urgent need to be vigilant.

There is also a risk of earthquakes in Turkey because the country is located in a seismically active zone. Travelers should also be aware of the possibility of bush and forest fires during the summer months. Driving can be problematic; The Federal Foreign Office advises not to take any car journeys after dark as this can be risky.

Overall, travelers should always stay up to date with the latest events and actively inform themselves about changes in the legal system, particularly with regard to drug offenses or political activities. German citizens do not need a visa for longer stays in Turkey, but you should always find out about the current regulations to avoid inconveniences.
