Activities on Kangaroo Island, Australia
Activities on Kangaroo Island, Australia
From enchanting wild animals to high -towering sand dunes we share the best things that can be undertaken on Kangaroo Island in Australia
Among the famous sights of Australia, Kangaroo Island doesn't get much attention. Of course there is Uluru and the Great Barrier Reef and the cities of Sydney and Melbourne, but Kangaroo Island remains less well known - maybe not a bad thing.
This island is home to around 60,000 kangaroos and has more kangaroos than humans. The streets are straight and empty and life slowly: a little prairie, a little self -made.
The island once used by seal catchers and whaling houses around 4,500 people - which means that over 13 kangaroos come in every person!
Of course, kangaroos are not the only attraction on the island; There are also seals, wallabies and koalas. We spent three days there and share the best things you can do on the kangaroo island, including a list of sights, a map and important information on how to come to kangaroo island.
sights
Flinders-chase national park
alt = “things to do on kangaroo island: remarkable rocks”> Atlas & Boots The Remarkable Rocks in Flinders Chase National Park
Flinder's chase, one of the best national parks in South Australia, is located at the western end of Kangaroo Island. With roofing made of sugar cuddly gum and Mallee peeling, the park is perfect for hiking. However, there is more to do here than to hike. From the winding formations of the remarkable rocks to the rugged edges of Admirals Arch, the park is full of natural wonders, which will easily devour one morning or even a whole day.

small Sahara sand dunes
Alt = “Activities on kangaroo island: The sand dunes of Little Sahara”> Atlas & Boots The sand dunes of Little Sahara
We didn't expect much of Little Sahara and stuck it to the end of a day. As it turns out, it is one of the best things you can do on Kangaroo Island. The dunes in question are unexpectedly huge, with endless white sandy beaches that upgrade over the surrounding scrub. The landscape is spoiled by sandboarders, so try to visit them towards the end of the day to avoid the greatest crowds.

Kelly Hill-Höhlen
Alt = “Kelly Hill Caves: Activities on the kangaroo island”> Atlas & Boots Kelly Hill-Höhlen
The Kelly Hill Caves are part of a complicated cave system made of stalactite, stalagmite, shell, helical and column formations. The caves can only be visited as part of the guided show cave tour that leads visitors into the underground to explore the formations. It contains one or two silly Gimmicks, but still is a lot of fun. The tours start at certain times, so plan in advance (first departure at 10.30 a.m., then a quarter after every hour until 4:15 pm; more available in the high season).

Cape Willoughby lighthouse
alt = “Cape Willoughby Lighthouse”> Dream time Cape Willoughby Leuchturm
Located on a rocky headland at the eastern end of the island, Cape Willoughby began to shine in 1852, the first lighthouse in South Australia. Today the picturesque white turret serves as a weather station. Inside, visitors can learn more about the rich maritime history of the region and look for Walen from above.

Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary
alt = “A Koala in Hanson Bay: Activities on Kangaroo Island“> Atlas & Boots A Koala in the Hanson Bay
The Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary is located at the western end of Kangaroo Island between the Kelly Hill Caves and the Flinders Chase National Park. Hanson Bay is surrounded by protected wilderness and the agitated southern Pole Armeas and is home to grazing kangaroos and wallabies, sleepy koalas high up in their trees and spiky ants that waddle over the floor.
We spent an afternoon to hike through the sanctuary and found one of the best things you can do on Kangaroo Island.

kangaroo island-game park
alt = “We decided not to visit the Kangaroo Island Wildlife Park”> Atlas & Boots We decided not to visit the Kangaroo Island Wildlife Park
We decided not to visit this park because we wanted to see the wildlife of the island in a more natural environment. Nevertheless, it is a big hit with tourists and offers encounters with wild animals, including cozy koalas and kangaroos that feed themselves by hand. In view of the strict Australian nature conservation laws, we are sure that this does not harm the animals, but we found that it was less than natural.

Robbenbucht
alt = “Seal Bay is home to the largest colony of Australian sea lions”> Dream Zeit Seal Bay is home to the largest colony of Australian sea lions
Seal Bay in the nature conservation park of the same name is home to the largest colony of Australian sea lions. Visitors can watch seals romping around on the beach, swimming in the sun or swimming in the sun. The beach can be reached via a footpath that meanders past dramatic cliffs and sand dunes. Guided tours start every hour. Visit a less crowded experience before 11 a.m. or after 1 p.m.

beaches
Emu-Bucht
alt = "The white sand of Emu Bay"> Atlas & Boots The White Sand by Emu Bay
emu bay on the north coast of the island is the only beach that allows cars. Despite the joint access, the beach remains flawless. With fine white sand that is stripped by gentle waves, it is the perfect place for a morning swimming or lazing in the late afternoon.
stokes bay
alt = “Stokes Bay is one of the best things you can do on Kangaroo Island”> Atlas & Boots Stokes Bay is one of the best things you can do on Kangaroo Island
The beach of Stokes Bay is absolutely breathtaking. You may be overwhelmed when you arrive, but don't be fooled: the main attraction is just a short walk from the parking lot on a rocky footpath. Follow the signs to the beach (if in doubt, ask a locals about the right direction). We appeared out of the rocks and discovered one of the best beaches on Kangaroo Island - practically deserted! Connect your visit to a dinner in the nearby Table 88, the restaurant, which has finally convinced us that tapas are worth the effort.
Vivonne Bay
alt = “A seal lazy on the Vivonne Bay”> Atlas & Boots A seal lazy on the Vivonne Bay
Vivonne Bay on the south coast of Kangaroo Island offers a quiet place for a walk after a long day of exploration. Swimming did not look good, but the wide, deserted sandy beaches make this a stop, not least for the thick -bellied seals that laze around in the bay.
pre -chamber bay and Pennington Bay
alt = "Pennington Bay on Kangaroo Island"> Dream time Pennington Bay on Kangaroo Island
We did not make it to Antechamber Bay or Pennington Bay on the eastern side of the island, but the locals have assured us that these are two of the best beaches on Kangaroo Island. If you are at this end of the island and cannot reach Stokes Bay (our favorite beach on the island), take a break at one of these bays.

Kingscote itself is the largest city on the island and well located to reach the most important sights. It also offers the largest selection of cafes and restaurants. Some of them close early, so check the opening times before you set off.
Parking is included in the room price and usually easy to reach. When we asked in a local café about parking restrictions, the owner smiled and said: "Don't worry about a ticket; that's AI", what is really what you really need to know about Kangaroo Island!
When: Thanks to the mild temperatures, Kangaroo Island is a year -round travel destination, although summer (December to February) is the most popular. The best travel time for Kangaroo Island is February to March when the weather is still warm and the children are back at school.
