How to get to Neck Lookout on Bruny Island

To get to Neck Lookout you must first get to Bruny Island. Ferries depart from Kettering, about 30 minutes south of Hobart. The ferry is fairly fast and allows you to take a vehicle fairly cheaply. Therefore, the best way to explore this beautiful piece of Tassie is to drive here yourself.

Once you arrive at the Roberts Point boat ramp, follow Lennon Road until it turns south onto the Bruny Island Main Highway. Eventually you reach The Neck with the narrow strip of sand and the large, signposted parking lot that you can't miss.

Alternatively, you can book a very popular full-day tour from Hobart to Bruny Island, which also includes a stop at the famous Neck Lookout!

Below I have pinned the exact location on Google Maps to make it easier for you to find it.

If you don't already have your own vehicle, you might be in for a shock. That's because Tassie has some of the most expensive car rental prices in Australia. To help you save a few bucks, I've listed the best resources for booking a rental car in Tasmania below.

The neck outlook

Neck Lookout is the best way to enjoy the scenic coastal vistas of this unique isthmus. Once you reach the parking lot, you'll have to climb 279 wooden steps to reach the outpost viewpoint above.

However, let me tell you, this view is worth the hype and the climb! At the top you have a 360 degree viewpoint overlooking the golden sands that separate the beautiful D'Entrecasteaux Channel (left) from the Tasman Sea (right).

The boardwalk and stairs also extend to Neck Beach, an incredibly long stretch of sand that is home to native birds such as short-tailed shearwaters and fairy penguins.
