Epic photos of Magnetic Island Wrack and wherever you can find
A short guide to exploring the SS City of Adelaide, the famous wreck from Magnetic Island, which was recaptured by nature. Find out how to get here with tips for great recordings.
The wreck from Magnetic Island, or more precisely, the SS City of Adelaide, is one of the best -known wrecks on the Australian coast.
What makes it so unique is that it was revived by dense mangroves that grow from the wreck. It is now also the home of a herd of Kakadus who live in the mangrove trees that sprout from the rusted deck.

Magnetic Island Wrack-The SS City Adelaide
While there are dozens of wrecks on Magnetic Island, the SS City Adelaide is one of the most famous.
It was originally a Scottish steam passenger ship that stranded due to a fire in shallow water in Cockle Bay, Magnetic Island.
At the time of the fall in 1916, it was decided that due to the shallow water, it would be too difficult to cut and recover the ship. Instead, it was decided that it would stay in Cockle Bay.

How do you get to Magnetic Island Wrack?
The wreck is located in Cockle Bay at the southern end of Magnetic Island. The best way to go to Picnic Bay and go on foot first.
There are buses that drive around the island, and it only takes about 15 minutes to get from Nelly Bay bus station to Picnic Bay. Anyone who comes from Horseshoe Bay has to expect a 40-minute journey.
From the Picnic Bay Wharf from you have several options to get to the legendary Magnetic Island Wrack. For the sake of simplicity, I attached the exact position of the wreck to the Google Maps below.
go from Picnic Bay around the rocks
at low tide it is possible to walk all the way around the rocks from Picnic Bay. It can get a bit muddy and you have to pay attention to the flood. However, this is the fastest way to reach the wreck.
Walk the Picnic Bay road from
You can walk around the headland and follow the suburbs until the end of the W Point Road to reach Picnic Bay Wharf's wreckage. It's just a short walk that does not take longer than 20 minutes.
For a precise direction, follow the map above.
on foot to the wreck at ebb
At low tide, the water shoots out and lets the wreck protrude completely out of the water. It is quite possible to walk all the way outside at low tide. However, observe the soft, falling mud.
Otherwise, admire the wreck from afar on the edge of the coast or even rent a kayak to paddle out of flood.Secret Local Wrack Outline
The best viewpoint at the southern end of Magnetic Island is also a first -class place to visit the wreck from Magnetic Island. It is not clearly marked on any card, and we found it purely by chance when we were looking for a place from which we could fly the drone. Apparently locals have called this viewpoint Sails Rock.
The viewpoint is located right next to a water tower in Cockle Bay. I marked the directions on the map below. If you come from Picnic Bay, it only takes about 20 minutes if you follow a steep street to the top.
As soon as you have reached the water tower, there is a small, non -marked path that leads a little further to a clearing with some huge, overhanging rocks on the edge of the cliff.
From the viewpoint you have an excellent view of the Cockle Bay and the Wrack as well as the whole route past Picnic Bay and into the hilly landscape inside.
