Millaa Millaa Falls - Incredible waterfall in the Atherton Tablelands near Cairns
Millaa Millaa Falls is probably one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Australia. The complete guide for visiting Millaa Millaa Falls in the Atherton Tablelands from Cairns, Queensland.
Millaa Millaa Falls is a very accessible and picturesque waterfall in the Tablelands region near Cairns. This special waterfall is known as the most photographed waterfall in Australia! And it is not difficult to understand why. It is really the ideal of a perfectionist, with perfectly falling water and a wide, round swimming pond at the base.
In this post I will sketch how you come here and what you expect after your arrival. I also added some photos of the Millaa Millaa waterfall, from which I hope you will inspire your visit to one of the most famous waterfalls in Australia.

How do you get the Millaa Millaa waterfalls?
Millaa Millaa Falls is located in the Atherton Tablelands, near the small community Millaa Millaa. If you have your own car or means of transport, it is a 1.5-hour drive from Cairns down the Bruce Highway and the serpentines of the Gillies Range Road Road.
I attached the location of the waterfall parking lot below to help you find it.
If you prefer a directional description, drive from Cairns to the south on the Bruce Highway towards Gordonvale. As soon as you approach the obvious Walsh’s Pyramid, keep an eye out for signs for the Atherton Tablelands above the Gillies Range Road.
Follow this winding road to the Tablelands, pass the crater lakes and continue to follow the signs to the south, just past Malanda. The Theresa Creek Road (Waterfall Circuit Road) is only about a minute away from the small town.
There are very detailed signs for each waterfall on this street, so that you should have no problems finding Millaa Millaa Falls as soon as you are on the road.
As soon as you have reached the parking lot, the waterfall is just around the corner at the foot of some stone levels. It is really impossible to overlook it.
Alternative: Best waterfall tour from Cairns
If you do not have your own means of transport, you can also take a waterfall tour from Cairns. Although I did not take a tour, the tour linked below offers the best price-performance ratio that I was able to find for a full-day tour that leads it to many different places near Cairns.
The total duration of the tour is 10-11 hours and includes:
- collection from the hotel in Cairns
- English -speaking tour guide
- hike in the nearby WooroOnooran National Park
- swim on the Josephine Falls (one of my favorite waterfalls near Cairns)
- swim to the Millaa Millaa Falls
- Platypus spotting in Yungaburra
- swim on Lake Eacham

What she awaits at Millaa Milaa Waterfall
The perfectly shaped waterfall pours into a beautiful water hole at the bottom. The scene seems to be hidden in the dense surrounding rainforest, with tropical palm trees, ferns and vines on each side.
Millaa Millaa Falls has a total waterfall height of 18.3 meters and the water hole is deep enough to swim. This waterfall was already included in the Queensland Heritage Register in 2005.

This waterfall definitely looks like a tropical North Queensland Waterfall. However, if you are looking for a surreal tropical waterfall at the end of a rainforest hike, this may not be the right one for you. The Millaa Millaa Water Fall is understandably a popular destination where coaches drive past every day.
A too much has happened here, perhaps to make it a more attractive goal for weddings and events.
If you prefer a more remote waterfall without construction or development, I can warmly recommend the nearby Windin Falls, Dinner Falls, Little Millstream or the other two waterfalls on the Millaa Millaa Water Fall Group (below).

Tip: Try to discover a platform
Apparently, if you are very lucky and have a sharp eye for the observation of wild animals, you may be able to discover a platform.
I haven't discovered a slab here, but maybe you are lucky! Otherwise there is a tip to drive into the nearby Yungaburra. Here is a viewing platform on Peterson Creek, where a bunch of little guys lives!
