Travel warning: Thailand is now more dangerous for tourists than ever!
On July 4, 2025, Australia issued a travel warning for Thailand. The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs (DFAT) is urging citizens to exercise increased caution following recent security incidents. Explosive devices have been discovered particularly near places heavily visited by tourists, such as Phuket International Airport. These dangers not only affect Phuket, but also other popular destinations such as Bangkok.
Thai authorities have already detected and defused several improvised explosive devices. In addition, two suspects were arrested who are said to have connections to the separatist rebel group “Barisan Revolusi Nasional” (BRN). These suspects reportedly planted 11 improvised explosive devices in Phuket, Krabi and Phang Nga. However, there are experts who question the BRN's involvement in these attacks.
Increased security measures
The warning has led to increased security measures at key transport hubs. Tourists in Phuket are advised to arrive at the airport early as there will be increased security checks. The Australian government also advises travelers to avoid demonstrations and crowds. Phuket's governor, Sophon Suwannarat, meanwhile, tried to downplay the threat to tourists, saying the items found had no destructive effect.
In addition to the bomb threats, the southern provinces of Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat are under a travel warning due to active insurgents. The warning level has been increased in the border region with Malaysia because there are threats from armed groups here. The borders with Cambodia are also temporarily closed, apart from humanitarian cases, as far as travelers are concerned.
Political tensions in Bangkok
The situation in Bangkok remains tense as political protests continue, particularly against Prime Minister Pätontarn Schinawat. These protests also pose a security risk for tourists, who should exercise caution in areas affected by these demonstrations. Shinawat also recently spoke out about flood victims and offered assistance as political tensions remain high in the country.
In summary, the current security situation in Thailand shows that both travelers and locals are exposed to a number of risks. With the ongoing bomb threats and political unrest, it is of utmost importance for tourists to keep themselves informed about the current situation and take precautionary measures.
