Are you interested in a stay at the Fitzroy Island Resort? After countless trips to this tropical island in Cairns, I finally got to spend a night here! In this short accommodation guide / report, I will outline everything you need to know about a stay at the Fitzroy Island Resort, including the facilities offered, how you can come here and how you can book a great offer.

About Fitzroy Island and the Resort

fitzroy Island is one of the closest Great Barrier Reef Islands near Cairns and can be reached by ferry in just 45 minutes. The island protrudes 370 meters above sea level and is actually the highest of the many popular islands in the region. Therefore, the island is ideal for hiking and the hem reef and the untouched snorkeling spaces make it an ideal place for snorkeling and diving.

The Fitzroy Island Resort is the only resort or the only accommodation option on the island, since the rest is divided into national parks and Cairn's regional Council awards.

If you are planning a trip to Fitzroy Island, a stay at the Fitzroy Island Resort makes sense, as there is simply so much to do here that it is difficult to cover it in just a short day trip. Fortunately, the Fitzroy Island Resort is actually one of the cheapest accommodation opportunities near Cairns when it comes to resorts.

Many people who visit Cairns decide to spend at least one night on the island, as this interrupts the trip perfectly!

Booking of a stay in the Fitzroy Island Resort

The resort on Fitzroy is one of the most popular places in Far North Queensland. As a result, you would expect the rooms to fill up pretty quickly. For this reason, I strongly recommend that you book a room online in advance to secure a place to your appointments.

In the Fitzroy Island Resort, there are several rooms and accommodation opportunities to choose from. Below I listed the options in the order from the most expensive to the cheapest. You can click on the booking link to find photos and current prices for every room.

  • Welcome Bay Apartment

  • Island suite
  • suite with 2 bedrooms
  • butterfly bungalows
  • Resort studio (double room or queensize bed)

I was accommodated in the Island Suite, which included a fully equipped kitchen, a living area, a bathroom, a separate bedroom with a sea view and a balcony with a view of the beach.

Arrival to Fitzroy Island (ferry)

If you want to stay in the Fitzroy Island Resort, you must of course also arrange a ferry. If you book a room, you will receive an email in which the ferry process is explained. You can also book a ferry for the return trip online in advance.

Times for the ferries are flexible with the option to choose one of the several daily ferry times. The ferry drives off the Cairns Reef Terminal and it is recommended to arrive there about 20 to 30 minutes before departure.

If you do not spend the night on the island, the ticket below is also the cheapest that you can find for a return transfer for day trips for $ 83 per person.

What you can expect in the Fitzroy Island Resort

After a short 45-minute drive from the port of Cairns you reach the white sand coast of Fitzroy Island, which is lined with reefs. When you spend the night in the Fitzroy Island Resort, go down to the pier and go up the steps to the entrance to the resort. Here she welcomes the staff and check them into her room.

If you travel to the island early, you can use the luggage rooms near the pool to keep your luggage before check-in.

The room

While you get a brief overview of the inclusive services in every room via the booking link above, I thought I would show you some photos of our room to show you how epic this resort is.

As I mentioned, we stayed in the Iceland Suite, which was right on the front door of Welcome Bay. We were really surprised that the suite had a fully equipped kitchen and a separate living area. The highlight was definitely the beach balcony with a view of the tropical gardens and the white coral coasts of Welcome Bay.

Pool with Swim-Up-Bar

One of the best highlights of the Fitzroy Island Resort is the huge pool on the beach. You can find it right next to the reception, complete with an island and a swim-up bar!

It is particularly spectacular on a warm evening in the tropics at night. It is really difficult to understand that you can get such a luxurious experience in Australia for less than $ 150 a night!

Restaurants

The Fitzroy Island Resort has its own restaurant called Zephyr’s. You will find it next to the reception area and it is open for breakfast and dinner. In addition, visitors can find another restaurant/bar a little further up on the beach. This is called Foxy’s and offers a little cheaper meals in the "bar food" style. Foxy’s is open for lunch and dinner and also serves cocktails and drinks.

Note: If you plan to dine for breakfast or dinner in the Zephyr’s, you have to reserve a table at least a few hours in advance, as it is very popular with guests.

Fish: diving center

The Fitzroy Island Resort has its own, newly designed diving center called Fish, which is located next to the pool entrance. I had the privilege to photograph their new tours and diving courses during my visit. This enabled me to get a deep insight into everything they had to offer and even go diving in their brand new diving equipment.

Since Fitzroy Island is located directly on the edge of the Great Barrier Reef, it is a great place to dive or snorkel. Here you will find healthy corals and a rich sea life. However, the best sights such as Shark Fin Rock are easier to reach by boat.

So if you plan to visit the island on a day trip or to spend the night in the Fitzroy Island Resort, visit the friendly staff of the diving base to learn more about your guided snorkeling and diving tours and your padi-licensed diving courses.

Children's playground

For busy parents who want to relax for a few hours, the Fitzroy Island Resort offers activities and support for children. You can find the game centers right next to Fish.

Mischwarenladen on Fitzroy Island

The only shop/kiosk on the island is next to Foxy’s Bar. This small shop is operated by the resort and sells small snacks and a few souvenirs. I found the prices a bit steep and the selection a bit tight, but I certainly don't expect much more from a small island. You can consider this more than a short stopover for light snacks.

If you plan a stay at the Fitzroy Island Resort and booked a suite or apartment with a kitchen, I would recommend bringing some food from the mainland instead of relying on the general store. Otherwise, they are easily supplied for meals in the two restaurants.

Equipment loan

fitzroy Island is one of my favorite islands of the Great Barrier Reef for adventure and activities. Visit Fish for a cheap equipment loan, including the rental of:

  • stand-up paddle boards

The judgment: Should you stay on Fitzroy Island?

I think it's pretty clear that I am a big fan of the Fitzroy Island Resort. For travelers like me who are used to guest houses and cheap hostels, I find it refreshing to experience first-class Australian luxury guest friendship for a few nights, without it costs as much as a 3-month backpack trip in Southeast Asia!

I'm super impressed by the resort and, frankly, can find little to complain about. In fact, I would say that everyone who comes to Cairns should spend at least one night here, especially if you want to go to one of the Great Barrier Reef Islands anyway!
