The most popular languages that are learned all over the world
at Atlas & Boots we mentioned Duolingo in almost all of our language articles, be it expert tips for learning several languages or tools for lazy learners. We are big fans of the app and were fascinated by the recent knowledge to the most popular languages that are learned worldwide
The team has viewed data from all countries around the world over the course of three months to identify the most popular languages that are learned by its 120 million users. The results are fascinating.
Before we look at the most interesting results, we should mention that Duolingo currently offers 19 languages, not all of which can be translated into any other language. As such, there is a certain natural distortion in the data, but they still offer some interesting insights.
English is by far the most popular language
In three times as many countries, the language is the first choice as the second most popular language. English is one of the two most popular languages in two thirds of all countries and, summarized across all countries, is learned of 53 % of all duolingo users.

French is the second most popular language
French is the second most popular language from two perspectives.
- It is the second most popular language (35 countries compared to English with 116)
- It is the most popular language second choice (77 countries compared to 57 Spanish)

This confirms our claim that French is the best language for learning for those who are already speaking English. However, it should be said that French is in close competition to Spanish. Although it is one of the two most popular languages in 58 % of all countries, compared to Spanish in 46 %, only 11 % of all duolingo users learn French compared to 17 % who learn Spanish.
Swedish is the most popular study language in Sweden
This anomaly is certainly characteristic in the map above. Are the Scandinavians not gifted?
Duolingo has an explanation for why 27 % of all users in Sweden learn Swedish: “Immigration to Sweden has risen in recent years: one of six Swedish residents in 2015 was born outside of Sweden. The growing growing groups come from Syria and Afghanistan, which reflects a recent increase in the refugee population."
English is the second most popular study language in the USA
English is the second most popular language learned in the United States (21 % of all users). Similar to Sweden, this can be explained by immigration.
The immigrant share of the entire US population is over 13 % and over 25 million people state that it is less than “very good” to speak English, which is likely to explain why so many duolingo use English.
Some locals do not speak their official language
Apart from immigration, some locals cannot speak their official language. In India, for example, English is an official language (together with Hindi), but only 10 % of Indians speak, which explains why it is the most popular language that is learned.
As former Portuguese colonies, Angola and Mozambique are the only official language. Nevertheless, 40 % or 50 % of the locals speak the language. It is the second most popular learning language after English, which in turn is a prerequisite for learning Portuguese.
in Canada, French is the most popular study language. Duolingo cares: "French is mainly spoken in the Québec region ... The other parts of Canada are much less bilingual, although French is mandatory for most Canadian students as a second language. Is this requirement the reason why a third of the duolingo users in Canada learn French? Or is it because most Canadians really want to learn their other official language?"
In contrast to his neighbors, Argentina learns Italian
Italian is the second most popular language that is learned in Argentina (after English). This is a kind of anomaly, since Italian nowhere else appears on the continent among the first two.
The reason becomes clear when you learn that 63 % of Argentinians have Italian blood due to the large immigration waves in the 19th and 20th centuries.
In contrast to his neighbors, Guyana does not learn English
In contrast to the rest of the South America, Guyana is not the learning English as one of the two best options, but instead opts for Spanish and Portuguese.
After over a century of British rule, it goes without saying that Guyana dominates English. In fact, it is the country's official language, in contrast to its neighbors on the continent.
German is the most popular study language in Namibia
For those who are not familiar with the colonial history of Namibia, it may be surprising that German is the most popular language that is learned there.

In fact, it is probably a result of German rule that Namibia fell into 1884. German was one of the country's official languages until 1990 and is currently spoken by 32 % of the white population of Namibia.
Bangladesh does not learn English
Spanish is the most popular language learned in Bangladesh, followed by French. It seems strange that English is not more popular. Is that due to the efforts of the Bangladeshische Fiihrer to emphasize the English less after independence? Could it be due to a relatively inferior Bengali-English duolingo course? Do Bengal have an affinity with Spain that we don't know anything about yet? We look forward to facts or theories that can contribute to clarification!
