Ban Gioc Waterfall: New tourism concept for unforgettable experiences!
The local population and authorities in the Ban Gioc Waterfall tourism area are currently working together to address tourism challenges. The aim is to improve security, order and the quality of tourism while at the same time creating new livelihoods for the locals. An ambitious project aims to change the appearance of the area: the chaotic sight of untidy stalls will become a thing of the past and be replaced by well-kept stalls and an untouched landscape.
Previously, the region's image was characterized by a lot of spontaneous trading activities and untidy tents, which significantly affected the aesthetics and the visitor experience. This development is a consequence of the population's efforts to adapt to tourism in order to increase their income. However, this led to chaotic conditions which are now being resolved.
Comprehensive measures for improvement
To improve the situation, various measures were introduced. A management strengthening project is being implemented with the aim of restoring order and securing livelihoods. A new service area will be set up, old sales stands will be relocated, and new parking options will be created, including transport services with electric cars. This environmentally friendly measure aims not only to minimize pollution but also to increase the attractiveness of the area.
Positive feedback from Chinese tourists and international travel agents about the scenery and service quality has already made the rounds. The Cao Bang Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism highlights improving purchasing conditions and creating new jobs as important aspects of the region's development plan. However, challenges during peak season are highlighted, including traffic congestion and disorganized parking.
Cross-border tourism cooperation
In the context of the development of Ban Gioc Waterfall, the China-Vietnam Cross-Border Tourism Cooperation Zone is also worth mentioning. This official zone opened on October 15, 2024 and connects the Chinese city of Chongzuo in Guangxi Province with the Vietnamese part of the waterfall. Tourists from both countries benefit from facilitated customs clearance services within this zone.
The management arrangements implemented include, but are not limited to, group bookings, time-limited cross-border travel and fixed itineraries. The Detian-Ban Gioc Waterfall is considered not only the largest transboundary waterfall in Asia, but also the fourth largest in the world. This cooperation is the first of its kind in China and is intended to provide valuable insights for cooperation between the two countries. According to official data, over 4,000 Chinese tourists have already visited the Vietnamese part of the zone from October to December 2024.
From May 16, 2025, a ticket sales point will be set up at the new parking lot and there will be close coordination with security forces to regulate traffic and assist tourists. Visitor feedback is collected to further improve the quality of service and make the development of the area sustainable. The future quality of tourism in Ban Gioc Waterfall appears promising, while cooperation with China could boost international tourism.
