Travel behavior 2025: German favorites and new trends revealed!

Expedia Group's Traveler Value Index 2025 shows fundamental changes in the travel behavior of consumers worldwide. The study, based on data from over 11,000 travelers across 11 markets, reveals that despite economic and geopolitical uncertainty, there is a notable increase in travel plans: 88% of respondents plan to take a holiday trip within the next 12 months, with two-thirds of those looking at international travel. This represents an increase of 19% compared to the previous survey in 2022.

A central aspect of the study is the increased awareness of the importance of travel. Around 50% of participants say that traveling is more important to them today than it was five years ago. While price remains a key booking factor for 58% of travelers, trust in accommodation is also becoming more important. 75% of respondents are willing to pay more for accommodation with better reviews, highlighting the trend towards quality and reliability.

New trends in travel behavior

The survey also highlights that travelers are increasingly embracing flexcations and bleisure trips that combine work and play. The influence of social media on travel planning has increased significantly in recent years. A notable increase can be observed: 61% of respondents are inspired by platforms, which was only 35% in 2022. Those under 40 are particularly influenced by recommendations from influencers - 84% say they have a significant influence on their travel decisions.

The value of loyalty programs is also highlighted. 83% of travelers see travel as the top category for redeeming loyalty points, and 82% are interested in booking travel through loyalty programs outside of the travel industry. These results show that travel behavior is becoming increasingly digitalized and diversified.

Regional differences in travel habits

The study shows clear regional differences in travel habits. Many people are planning a trip abroad, particularly in China (87%), Great Britain (77%) and Germany (72%). German travelers value full refunds for air travel, while in China contactless travel is a top priority. It also emphasizes that price and reviews are the deciding factors when it comes to rental cars and accommodation, with younger generations paying more attention to online reviews.

Greg Schulze, Chief Commercial Officer of Expedia Group, summarizes the results of the study: “Despite global challenges, the desire to travel remains unbroken.” These insights highlight how travel remains a core part of consumers' lives and continues to evolve tophotel.de and dayticket.io report.
