Jodhpur, the second largest city in Rajasthan, attracts travelers from all over the world who want to see the incredible palaces, forts and temples. Located in the harsh Thar Desert, this historic Marwar capital features densely populated urban labyrinths surrounding a stunning and impregnable fortress, Mehrangarh Fort.

Known by many nicknames, from Sun City to Fort City, perhaps the most intriguing moniker, at least for photographers, is the Blue City of India.

In this guide, I will detail what I consider to be the best “blue areas” and streets in Jodhpur, after spending days exploring every corner of this incredible place, camera in hand.

Jodhpur: Is everything really blue?

It has long been the case that Instagram and other channels with viral capacity can distort our expectations somewhat. I know this was true for me in the case of Jodhpur as I struggled to find the baby blue lined streets I had seen and heard so much about.

The truth is, Jodhpur definitely has an overall theme of “blue,” but it is certainly not the Chefchaouen of India. The majority of Jodhpur's metropolitan areas are not painted blue, but rather carry the same style of whitewashed concrete plaster architecture as many other Rajasthani cities.

However, don't get your hopes up. The city of Jodhpur deserves its eloquent nickname – you just need to know where to look to find the Blue City location.

Where can I find the blue city in Jodhpur, India?

Most of Jodhpur's blue streets are in the old town, on the southwestern edge of the fort. Below I will describe the best places to watch them. If you're not in Jodhpur yet, try to stay somewhere near the old town or near Mehrangarh Fort. If you scroll to the bottom of this post, I also have a section with the best accommodation options.

Again, don't expect every inch of every wall to be painted blue, or you might leave a little disappointed. Personally, I prefer the old, weathered walls with different shades of blue. The hundred layers of weathered paint and intricate religious paintings tell a story through these walls and are more pleasant to photograph.

Jodhpur is huge! So try to stay central if you can.

Walking tour of the Blue City in India

Jodhpur is huge. The streets are chaotic and it's almost like a step back in time for those used to the modernized infrastructure in other Rajasthan cities like Jaipur.

In this guide, I will do my best to help you find the Blue City in Jodhpur independently. However, I also recommend a few very highly rated walking tours below that will take you to the best areas to see the blue buildings in Jodhpur. To be honest, a local Indian tour guide is your best bet to avoid feeling disappointed.

The best blue city tour provider in Jodhpur is BlueCity Walks. They offer a range of tours depending on what you are looking for and I can personally vouch for their quality and friendliness. Below I have linked some of their best tours with prices.

Walking tour of the Blue City Price (USD)
Discover Blue City Tour (running since 1978) $30
Explore Blue City (Quick 2 hours) $9
Jodhpur Food Walking Tour $16

Map of Jodhpur old town

Below are two maps of the old town that are useful for finding the Blue City of Jodhpur.

Navchowkiya – Beautiful blue houses and buildings

Navchowkiya or “Nav Chowk”, sometimes called “Navi/Nawi Chowk”, is one of the best places in Jodhpur to find blue buildings. To get here, it takes about 20 minutes' walk or a 10-minute rickshaw ride from the central points of Ghanta Ghar clock tower and Sardar market area.

The best way to avoid getting lost is to simply plug “Navchowkiya” into your Google Maps and let yourself be guided. It's easy to get tangled up in the complicated network of sprawling alleys and narrow corridors. For this reason, try taking “Clock Tower Road” west until you reach Navchowkiya.

Also, it's best not to get lost until you actually find the Blue City.

As soon as you arrive, you will almost immediately notice the increasingly blue buildings. Surprisingly, these streets are very quiet, and you'll almost certainly have them all to yourself, apart of course from the curious locals who may or may not be happy to take a photo. There is no particular street that is bluer than the others, so just wander, explore and try to find some hidden gems for yourself.

Chandpole – unexplored blue city

A second, often mentioned area of Jodhpur to find the Blue City is Chandpole. This is right next to Navchowkiya and has a similar blue theme.

To reiterate, it is impossible to tell you the exact road to look for in Chandpole. However, I have pinned the GPS coordinates on the map above, which I found to be one of the most beautiful and vibrant blue districts in the old town of Jodhpur. This area lies almost directly between Chandpole and Navchowkiya and lies below the towering fort.

GPS coordinates: 26° 17′ 51.852″ N 73° 0′ 51.084″ E

Epic view of the blue city from Mehrangarh Fort

Perhaps the best way to get a feel for the scale of Jodhpur's Blue City is to admire it from Mehrangarh Fort. This offers one of the best views of the blue city in Jodhpur due to its elevated location.

Furthermore, exploring the fort is also one of the best things to do in Jodhpur, so you should definitely check it out.

Since you have to pay for entrance tickets, I recommend just booking a full-day Jodhpur sightseeing tour. This will take you to the best attractions in Jodhpur including the fort and they will also show you the best view of the Blue City of Jodhpur from the fort.

It's also great value for money and a lot cheaper than you'd expect.

Why is Jodhpur called the blue city and why is it blue?

Jodhpur gets its name as the “Blue City” because Rajasthan has become famous for its vibrant, brightly colored cities. For example, Jaipur is known as Pink City, Udaipur is known as White City and Jaisalmer is known as Golden City.

But why is Jodhpur blue? After doing some research and speaking to some locals, I found that no one has a clear answer. However, there are some ideas why Jodhpur is blue.

The first reason is that Jodhpur was and has a large population. the Brahmin castes who profess their loyalty to Lord Shiva. Shiva's sacred color and the color of Brahmins is blue. Therefore, a large part of the old town was painted blue.

Other ideas include the fact that blue walls are said to deter mosquitoes. This was interesting because both the interior and exterior of the buildings appear to be painted blue. Blue is also a calming color that reflects heat well. Which makes sense because the summer heat in the sunny city is very extreme.

Where to stay in the Blue City of India: Jodhpur

With the guide out of the way, here are some of my personal favorite shots that I captured while exploring the Blue City Jodhpur. Unfortunately, I stole my SD card from the drone. I was devastated, but at least I had some low quality backups synced to my phone.
