Many hikers planning a trip to the Nepalese Himalayas get stuck wondering what to pack. The truth is that everyone's gear list can be a little different based on various factors including; Seasons, preferences and tolerance for pack weight.

However, if the Three Passes trek will be your first major trek in the Himalayas, then I am sure this useful packing list will serve as a basis for your gear.

Three passports packing list

So, here is my recommended three-pass packing list. I created this list based on my personal experience with the Three Pass Trek as well as with the help of several trekking shops in Thamel.

I have included optional links to each article as a recommendation. However, you can also purchase most of these items cheaply in Thamel (although usually of lower quality).

So if you are at home and using this three-pass packing list, you need to decide what to bring to Nepal and what to buy in Thamel before the trek.

1. Upper body

During the days on the passes it is important to keep your core warm and dry.

• 2x Langarm-Thermounterwäsche – Merinowolle bietet die beste Qualität
• 1x Trekkingshirt – leicht, aber strapazierfähig
• 1x Isolationsschicht – leichtes Fleece ist eine tolle Sache
• 1x Daunenschicht

2. Head

Here are some essential accessories to include in your three-pass packing list.

3. Legs and boots

Boots are arguably the most important piece of trekking gear you can have, but what do you need to bring for your legs?

• Optional: Kindle – ideal zum Lesen in den Teehütten und um leichte E-Book-Führer zu haben
• Optional: Solarladegerät – nicht wirklich notwendig, kann aber helfen, Ihre Elektronik tagsüber aufzuladen
• Optional: Kamera – GoPro ist großartig, aber die Berge sehen auf Ultra-Wide-Kameras klein und weit entfernt aus. Eine kleine spiegellose Kamera wie die a6500 ist eine gute Wahl.

Breakdown of the shift system

When researching what to bring for the Everest Three Passes Trek or any overnight alpine treks, you will often come across the term; Layering.

But what is it?

Basically it's just that. Use multiple lighter layers to keep warm instead of having a heavy, bulky all-in-one snow jacket.

Layers give you more control over temperature regulation by using breathable fabrics that are appropriate for the conditions.

How heavy should my bag be?

Minimizing pack weight is usually the top priority for long-distance hikers. Make sure your backpack doesn't weigh you down too much during the long days at altitude.

So, how heavy should the Three Passes pack be? Aim for 10-14kg.

To keep the weight down when planning your Three Passes gear list, don't bring more pairs of clothing than you really need. Most trekkers usually wash their socks and dry their sweaty shirts and underwear every day after changing at the tea house. The dry conditions in the Himalayas mean things usually dry overnight.

Thamel Shopping Guide – Where to buy cheap trekking gear in Kathmandu

Do you want to buy equipment for the Three Passes hike when you arrive in Kathmandu? Good call.

The demand for cheap trekking gear in Thamel has created a huge gray market for everything from counterfeit North Face hardshells to worn-out Lowa hiking boots.

It's true, in Thamel you can really buy everything you need for the Three Pass hike. However, keep in mind that the quality will not always be the best.

For decent quality inexpensive gear with shopkeepers who will tell you what you need and not just try to make a quick buck, check out Kalapatthar Trekking Store and Shona’s Alpine. I purchased all of my non-essential performance items such as fleeces, t-shirts, hats, buffs, socks and even trekking poles from these two stores.

Tips for saving money

Remember that bartering is commonplace in all market shops in Nepal. Don't settle for first price, but don't push the business owner's profit margins to near zero either.

There is a good balance that should be maintained in barter and that is usually answered by the question; How much is this item really worth to me?

In addition to bartering, here are a few other tips to save money when shopping for your three-pass packing list.

Where to stay in Thamel to shop this three-pass packing list

Choosing the right accommodation before and after the trek is important as you will most likely need to leave some non-trekking equipment with a trusted caretaker. Secondly, trust me when I say that you want a nice bed with a warm shower when you return from the mountain.

Therefore, it is best to choose the same hotel or hostel for the nights before and after the Three Passes hike.

I stayed at Beehive Hostel, a budget accommodation just 3 minutes from the main shopping area that offers hot showers and large, comfortable private rooms. They also let us leave our bags there for free for 20 days while we were in the Khumbu.

If you want something a little more elegant, try the Hotel Blue Horizon or the Fairfield by Marriott.
