If you have just arrived in Labuan Bajo, you may be wondering, “Where is the best place to watch the sunset in Labuan Bajo?” In my opinion, the rolling hills north of the city are the best area to watch the sunset.

To get here, it's just a short 5-minute scooter ride over the winding hills north of Labuan Bajo Port. Unfortunately it's a bit far to walk as it will probably take over an hour.

What to Expect at Labuan Bajo Sunset Hill

Once you arrive, you'll notice that there are actually a few hills that you can climb to watch the sunset. You have the option to walk up the small hill I marked above or alternatively cross the road and climb the higher hill known as “Bukit Amelia Sea”.

Whichever sunset viewpoint you like, both will reward sunset hunters with sweeping views of the small port town as well as great views of the islands in the distance.

These hills are quite strange and are called “Teletubby hills” by the locals. When you arrive you will undoubtedly discover why. The hills in this area are a far cry from the rugged Jurassic peaks of Komodo and Padar Island. Instead, you get gentle, sloping hills that roll into the sea.

Is Labuan Bajo Sunset Hill too far from the city for you? While I prefer watching sunsets from a viewpoint or hilltop rather than a bar or hotel, I admit that I've been able to experience some absolute gems right in the city!

Here is a short list of other great sunset spots in Labuan Bajo.

Seaesta hostel

I have mentioned this place in other blogs. Seaesta Hostel is an epic sunset spot, perched on the hill behind the harbor and overlooking Labuan Bajo and the distant Komodo Islands. The atmosphere here is crazy, with a pool, bar, gym and restaurant.

This place really blew me away. I'm not even getting paid to write this - it's seriously one of the coolest hostels in Asia and hands down one of the best places to watch the sunset in Labuan Bajo. You don't have to stay here to visit either, the staff is friendly and happy for you to just buy a drink or something to eat.

Bajo rooftop bakery

During my short time in Labuan Bajo, my favorite place to work and chill was on the rooftop of Bajo Bakery. This place is strategically located near the waterfront, right in the center of the city.

Ciao Hostel

Another great sunset spot in Labuan Bajo is Ciao Hostel. Ciao is located on a hill overlooking the city. I stayed here on my first night in Labuan Bajo and I would rate their rooftop on par with the sunset hill of Labuan Bajo. – You can read a little more about this hostel below, with links to book.

Where to Stay in Labuan Bajo – Accommodation Guide

WHERE I STAY: CIAO HOSTEL As far as hostels go, this is one of the best I've found in Indonesia. Everything is super clean, it includes free transportation to the airport or town, and is located on the hill above Labuan Bajo. In my opinion, this Labuan Bajo sunset view from the balcony is worth the money and one of the best places to watch the sunset in the city!

BEST HOSTEL IN INDONESIA – SEAESTA HOSTELEEven if you don’t stay here, visiting Seaesta Hostel in Labuan Bajo is a must. This place is crazy! It has an incredible rooftop bar and pool, a fully air-conditioned gym, and super comfortable bunks with thick mattresses. Although we didn't stay here, we chose to spend a lot of time here, relaxing by the pool and working.

CHEAP DOUBLE BUNK – SIOLA HOTELMy second accommodation in Labuan Bajo was the Siola Hotel. This one is super easy and more suitable for budget travelers. If you are a couple, this is the cheapest double bed you can find in Labuan Bajo. For $9 you get a double bed right next to the night market and harbor, free breakfast, and a private bunk with a bamboo door.
