Vietnamese football under pressure: U22 and national team are preparing!

On May 29, 2025, the Vietnamese national team took the first step in preparing for the challenges ahead. During the FIFA Days in June, a strategic meeting will be held between the national and U22 teams of the Vietnam Football Association (VFF) to establish a sustainable future for football in the country. The focus is on the 2027 Asian Cup qualification as well as the upcoming U23 Championship and the SEA Games.

Coach Kim Sang-sik has released the list of 23 national players who will gather in Hanoi today. This team retains the squad that won the 2024 ASEAN Cup and includes players such as Dinh Trieu, Duy Manh and Quang Hai. A particular highlight is the first appearance of Vietnamese-American defender Cao Vinh, who recently received Vietnamese citizenship. In addition, goalkeeper Nguyen Filip returns to the team after a family absence.

U22 team in full preparation

At the same time, the U22 team under coach Dinh Hong Vinh started its training phase with 26 players. The preparation focuses on the 2025 Southeast Asian U23 Championship as well as the 2026 Asian U23 Qualification and the 33rd SEA Games. Two new talents, Vietnamese-American player Bui Alex playing in the Czech Republic and some promising players abroad, broaden the prospects for the U22.

The SEA Games 33 in Thailand is a clearly defined goal for the U22 who want to win back the gold medal. VFF President Tran Quoc Tuan has emphasized the challenge, while coach Kim Sang Sik has been organizing intensive training camps since 2024 to optimally prepare the team.

International talent and strategic direction

The VFF also attaches great importance to international players to support the U22. Several overseas-playing Vietnamese talents, such as Viktor Le and Andrej An Khanh, are on the shortlist. The selection process for these players is ongoing and will be accompanied by rigorous evaluations and clearance from their clubs. In addition, the 1.92 m tall central defender Zan Nguyen could be a valuable addition to the team.

Coach Kim Sang Sik has the responsibility to develop a cohesive team structure and optimal playing style and sees this as a key to achieving the gold medal at the SEA Games. The close connection between the two team coaches promotes communication and a shared football philosophy, which is crucial for the long-term development of Vietnamese football.

Despite the injury problem affecting some key players such as Nguyen Xuan Son and Van Toan, the clubs' commitment to supporting the national team remains undiminished. The synchronization of training plans and continuous observations between the two teams show that the VFF is ready to promote a sustainable football culture that goes beyond regional successes.

Overall, there is a lot to look forward to in the upcoming international competitions, where both the national and U22 teams want to showcase their skills. Work is already in full swing in order to be as well prepared as possible and to achieve the goals set.
