State funeral for Tran Duc Luong: mourning across the country!

On May 22, 2025, the Funeral Committee issued a special declaration regarding the state funeral of former President Trần Đức Lương, who died on May 20, 2025 at the age of 88. Trần Đức Lương was born on May 5, 1937 in Đức Phổ District, Quảng Ngãi Province in Vietnam and spent his last years in Hanoi, where he moved after graduating from high school in 1954. His involvement in politics began in 1959 when he joined the Communist Party of Vietnam, and over the years he rose to various political positions, including Vice Prime Minister and later President of Vietnam, a position he held from 1997 to 2006.

The state funeral officially took place on May 24th and 25th, 2025. Celebrations and mourning period

According to Government Decree No. 105/2012/ND-CP of 2012, flags will be flown at half-mast throughout the country during the national funeral. The flag will also be decorated with a mourning ribbon and raised respectfully to pay final respects to the late president. These symbolic actions not only highlight the loss of an important politician, but also strengthen the national sense of togetherness in times of mourning.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism also announced that no cultural, artistic or sporting activities will be allowed to take place during the national funeral. This applies to both public entertainment events and all planned events. This decision is intended to give people the opportunity to express their grief for the late President and show him the due dignity and respect he deserved.

A legacy in politics

Trần Đức Lương will be remembered not only as a former president, but also as an influential figure in Vietnamese politics. During his time as president, he showed great influence by introducing several significant reforms in the 1990s and early 2000s. His membership in the Politburo since 1996 and the responsibilities that came with it shaped the direction of Vietnamese politics at a crucial time for the country. His son, Trần Tuấn Anh, was also active in the political arena, leading the Communist Party's Central Economic Committee before stepping down in 2024.
