Vietnamese culture in focus: strengthening internationalization and identity!

May 22, 2025 is all about Vietnamese culture. An important workshop led by Nguyen Van Hung, member of the party's Central Committee and Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, aims to position Vietnamese culture internationally and promote a stronger cultural identity in the country and abroad. The workshop was hosted both on-site and online, creating a connection between Vietnam's 63 provinces and cities. Ton Thi Ngoc Hanh, deputy chairwoman of the Dak Nong Provincial People's Committee, as well as numerous representatives from various departments and sectors were particularly prominent.

The workshop served to discuss the project “Internationalization of Vietnamese Culture and Vietnamization of International Culture” developed by the Party Committee of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. The main goal of this project is to strengthen the contribution of Vietnamese culture at the international level. Minister Nguyen Van Hung highlighted the strategic importance of the project and emphasized that it should significantly improve the international position of Vietnamese culture.

Structure of the project

The project is divided into six main parts, which provide a comprehensive basis for further cultural development:

  • Grundlage der Projektentwicklung
  • Kontext, Chancen und Herausforderungen
  • Standpunkte, Ziele und Aufgaben bis 2035 sowie Vision bis 2045
  • Lösungen
  • Durchführungsorganisation

A central part of the workshop was discussing the development of Vietnamese culture and art in the new era. The party's policies and guidelines for the internationalization of culture were also discussed. One focus was on the role of culture and the cultural and creative industries in the sustainable development of the country.

Cultural diversity in Vietnam

However, a look at Vietnamese culture also shows its complex religious practices. There is no unified religious community in Vietnam. The Vietnamese tend towards pragmatic solutions whose forms of belief are strongly oriented towards social structures and worldviews. The ancestor cult and animistic traditions in particular play a central role, because the belief in the immortality of the soul allows for the idea that the deceased take part in the life of the family.

Honoring ancestors is firmly anchored in Confucianism, which also emphasizes long-term planning and thrift. In addition, Taoism, with its pursuit of harmony between spirit and matter, and Buddhism, which represents a mixture of different belief systems, play an important role in Vietnam's religious life.

There are also around 12 million Christians in the country, who were spread during the colonial period, particularly through Catholicism, and also commemorate their ancestors. The diverse belief systems and cultural richness of the Vietnamese people contribute to the nation's extraordinary diversity.

The workshop not only aims to strengthen Vietnamese culture internationally, but also to preserve and pass on its roots and traditions. The discussions and presentations during this event served as a valuable basis for the future promotion and dissemination of Vietnamese culture abroad.
