Spain unites rural tourism: Redtur provides a strong voice!
A new national rural tourism network has been launched in Spain, known as Redtur (Red Española de Turismo Rural). The official presentation took place at the Fitur tourism fair in Madrid. The aim of Redtur is to bring together fragmented regional initiatives and strengthen rural tourism as an important sector of the economy. This move comes at a time when there is growing interest in holiday travel to the Spanish provinces and the sector is becoming increasingly important.
Redtur forms the first nationwide organization to represent the interests of rural tourism. Before its founding, numerous regional and local associations operated independently, without clear national representation. The network will better position rural tourism towards authorities, institutions and the market. Redtur's founding members include associations from various regions, including Asturias, Cantabria, Castile and León, La Rioja, Catalonia and the Basque Country.
Strengthening rural areas
With almost 15,900 accommodations and around 155,000 beds, rural tourism in Spain has a significant economic component. Around 24,000 people are currently employed in the rural tourism sector, particularly in regions where alternative employment opportunities are rare. Redtur has set itself the goal of counteracting rural exodus and strengthening small villages and the local economy.
Redtur's initiatives not only include stronger advocacy, but also the promotion of sustainable offerings in rural regions. This is done through collective advertising, further training and exchange of experiences. The aim is to bridge regional differences and create a unified voice for this growing sector.
Sustainability in focus
A central aspect of the network is respect for nature, culture and local identity. Given the challenges of mass tourism in Spain, it is important to focus on sustainable forms of tourism. Redtur therefore pursues the integration of environmentally friendly practices to ensure that rural tourism can provide economic prospects in the long term.
Comprehensive strategies to promote low-impact tourism are necessary to combat environmental problems caused by mass tourism. These challenges include overexploitation of natural resources and the destruction of ecosystems. Redtur will also address these issues and take measures to minimize the ecological impact.
Overall, the Redtur network offers a promising opportunity to promote rural tourism in Spain while preserving the regions' cultural and natural identity. The initiatives are a direct response to the growing interest in sustainable travel experiences and the need to economically support small communities.
