40 years of The Goonies”: A reunion for Oscar winner Quan!
On June 7, 1985, the cult film “The Goonies” premiered in US cinemas. Director Richard Donner, who died in 2021, staged the adventurous story of a group of children and teenagers who go on a treasure hunt. Today, 40 years after its release, the main actors are all over 50 years old and can look back on diverse careers. The film's large cast includes Sean Astin, Ke Huy Quan, Jeff Cohen, Corey Feldman, Josh Brolin, Kerri Green and Martha Plimpton.
Sean Astin, known for his role as Michael “Mikey” Walsh, the leader of the Goonies, also played the iconic character Samwise “Sam” Gamgee in “Lord of the Rings.” While Astin was not present at the recent ceremony, he later met up with his former colleagues at the premiere of the film "Love Hurts," which opens in theaters on February 7, 2024.
Festive tribute to Ke Huy Quan
A special Goonies cast reunion was held in honor of Ke Huy Quan, who was honored at a hand and footprint ceremony at the TCL Chinese Theater in Hollywood on February 4, 2024. Quan, who is 53 and played Richard "Data" Wang in the film, received widespread recognition for his "meteoric rise" in the film industry. Producer Steven Spielberg, who was unable to attend, read a letter praising Quan. Josh Brolin, who starred as Brandon “Brand” Walsh, commented on the well-deserved praise Quan received.
Chris Columbus, screenwriter of “The Goonies,” called Quan “the greatest comeback story in the history of cinema.”
After almost 20 years away from acting, Quan won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in 2022 for his role in “Everything Everywhere All at Once”. He has since also appeared in Loki and Kung Fu Panda 4. During the ceremony, he recalled a dream from his childhood when he was just 13 years old and saw the hand and footprints of Spielberg and George Lucas.
The Other Goonies
Ke Huy Quan's co-stars have also evolved in their careers. Jeff Cohen, who played Lawrence “Chunk” Cohen, has been out of acting for 30 years and now runs an entertainment law firm. Corey Feldman, who portrayed Clark "Mouth" Devereaux, is primarily active in music after appearing in numerous films in the '80s and dealing with personal challenges.
Josh Brolin, who starred as Mikey's older brother in The Goonies, has also become a sought-after actor, known for films such as No Country for Old Men and Milk. Kerri Green, who played Andrea “Andy” Carmichael, founded her own production company, while Martha Plimpton, who played Stefanie “Stef” Steinbrenner, appears regularly in Hollywood productions and theater performances and has won several Tony Awards and an Emmy for her work.
Although rumors of a sequel to The Goonies being produced have been circulating, they have been dismissed as false by Feldman and Plimpton. But the legacy of the film, which became part of a remarkable summer program in Hollywood and continues to delight generations of viewers, remains undisputed.
