AIDA Cruises celebrates double victory at the ESG Shipping Awards 2025!

On May 23, 2025, AIDA Cruises celebrated significant achievements in the shipping industry in Athens. The company has been recognized with two ESG Shipping Awards, recognizing sustainable efforts in the cruise industry. The Silver Award in the “Technology Leader” category was awarded for the innovative use of biofuels, while the Silver Award in the “Community Leader” category honored the AIDA Cruise & Help initiative.

Dirk Inger, SVP Public Affairs, Communication & Sustainability at AIDA Cruises, was proud of these awards and emphasized the importance of sustainable practices in the maritime sector. “The awards are further evidence of our commitment to innovation and social responsibility,” he said.

Sustainability in focus

Every year, the ESG Shipping Awards honor companies in the maritime industry in ten categories. AIDA Cruises has already received a Gold Award in 2024 for installing the largest battery storage system in passenger shipping, with a storage capacity of 10 megawatt hours on board AIDAprima. This commitment to sustainable technologies speaks to the company's long-term goals, which aim for net-zero emissions in shipping operations by 2050.

In order to achieve these ambitious goals, AIDA Cruises works intensively with partners from science and industry. The focus is on the development of new drive technologies as well as research into bio- and e-fuels. What is particularly noteworthy is that AIDAprima was the first large cruise ship to be successfully operated with marine biofuel in 2022, which reduces greenhouse gas emissions by at least 85 percent.

Educational initiatives for youth

Another aspect of AIDA Cruises' social commitment is the AIDA Cruise & Help initiative, founded in 2019, which focuses on improving educational opportunities for children and young people in developing countries. To date, this initiative has funded 80 schools, enabling 12,000 children to access education. This shows that the company invests not only in technological innovations, but also in the future of young people.
