Matura classes from HLW Spittal conquer the pearl of Istria: Pula is waiting!
On Monday, September 15, 2025, the students of the HLW Spittal Matura classes, together with their companions Martin Penker and Pia Oitzl, set off on a four-day final trip to Pula, the capital and pearl of Istria. Despite a delayed arrival due to breakdowns and traffic jams, the travelers reached their destination, the Splendid Resort, after five hours.
After arriving, the group was able to settle into the apartments and explore the various outdoor options. They then took their first dip into the refreshing waters of the Adriatic or alternatively relaxed at the in-house pool. The trip not only offers the opportunity to relax, but also aims to discover the historical heritage and cultural life of Pula.
Cultural highlights in Pula
Pula is known for its impressive historical sites. One of the highlights is the third largest amphitheater in the Roman Empire, known as... Pulska Arena is known. This amphitheater, an important ancient monument of Croatia, was built between 27 BC. Built in 68 BC and 68 AD, it is older than many other surviving Roman buildings. It features fully preserved four towers and is one of the six largest surviving amphitheaters in the world.
The arena, which had a capacity of up to 23,000 spectators, measures 132.45 m long and 105.10 m wide. The elliptical shape and impressive limestone outer walls, which stand up to 29.40 m high, make it an impressive sight. A special feature of the arena is its underground system, which was used for rainwater drainage and was once also used for events.
The current use of the arena is also noteworthy. It is not only used for theater performances, but also as a venue for concerts and sports competitions. For example, in 2019, a football match between former FC Bayern Munich players and the Croatian national team took place in the arena, highlighting the important cultural life of this city.
The HLW Spittal trip aims to strengthen the school community and prepare students for the upcoming senior year. By exploring the city and its cultural riches, the high school students not only learn more about the history of Pula, but also about the importance of community and cooperation in their school careers.
