The best road bikes of 2025: high performance meets affordable prices!
On June 9, 2025, the top models from many bicycle manufacturers will be presented with prices ranging between 10,000 and 18,000 euros. A comprehensive comparison of twelve high-end racing bikes in issue 1-2/2025 of RennRad shows the exorbitant costs that are often unattainable for average earners. Nevertheless, tests of such models have their right to exist, and current buyers of racing bikes are focusing on a more accessible price category around 4,000 euros, which offers a variety of options for hobby riders.
The test includes highly differentiated models with different orientations. Among the bikes tested is thisStorck Aerfast.4 Comp, which has been optimized for racing use. It features a flat frame and fork and is equipped with a Shimano 105 Di2 groupset that offers 52/36 at the front and 11-34 at the rear. The model weighs 8.42 kg and impresses with its sporty design.
Models under test
Another notable model is thisVan Rysel RCR-R CF, which with a weight of 8.23 kg (size L) offers high comfort over long distances and is therefore not exclusively suitable for racing use. Furthermore, it is convincingRaymon Kirana Ultrawith a weight of 7.75 kg, which is characterized by maneuverability and agility and ensures a comfortable driving style.
The1of1 G.01turns out to be a sporty gravel bike with 34 mm wide tires that is well suited for both bikepacking and commuting. This also offersBenotti Blade EDRWith its 28 mm wide tires, a comfort-oriented geometry and high long-distance and everyday suitability.
Trend towards wider tires and electronic gears
A noticeable trend in the racing bike category is the use of wider tires, with seven of the eleven test bikes being equipped with 28 mm wide tires. The exceptions include the Canyon Endurace and Raymon Kirana, which even have 30 mm tires fitted, while the 1of1 model has the widest tires at 34 mm.
A lot has also developed in the field of circuit technology. The trend is clearly towards electronic gears, with two of the bikes tested with theSRAM Rival AXS groupsetand six models are equipped with the Shimano 105 Di2, while three bikes use Ultegra Di2. The SRAM AXS family, which is also optimized for mountain bikes, offers wireless technology and enables radio shifting with 1 x 12 gears. In addition, the twelve-speed components are compatible with each other.
A key innovation in the SRAM AXS series is the mounting of the Eagle Transmission rear derailleurs directly on the frame without a derailleur hanger. This increases shifting precision because the specific design of the derailleur hanger is no longer necessary. The construction requires the UDH (Universal Derailleur Hanger) specification and allows for more robust rear derailleurs with an evasive mechanism for fall protection.
The tests and reports on the best-selling racing bikes are available in detail in RennRad 7/2025, which is a valuable source of information for those interested.
