Discover Trieste: historical splendor and Mediterranean flair!

On May 6, 2025, the travel group with CN Reisen and Bavaria Tours took travelers to the Italian city of Trieste. Despite the rainy weather, participants took the opportunity to explore the charms of this port city in northeastern Italy. Trieste, located on the Gulf of Trieste and close to the Slovenian border, was once an economic center and flourished around 1900 with many magnificent buildings.

This lively city, which now functions as a university town and the seat of the Roman Catholic diocese, has developed from an insignificant place in the Roman Empire into a major port city. The city's coat of arms, which shows a white hooked spear, is erroneously known as the "halberd" and is displayed in the Cathedral of San Giusto.

Piazza dell’Unità d’Italia

The heart of Trieste is the Piazza dell’Unità d’Italia. This impressive plaza is the largest in Europe located by the sea and covers more than 12,000 m². The piazza was once known by various names, including Piazza San Pietro and Piazza Grande. Historical events that took place here include the visit of Emperor Charles VI. in 1728 as well as a major speech by Mussolini in 1938.

Surrounded by magnificent neoclassical buildings, some of the important sights in the piazza are the Palazzo del Governo, the Palazzo del Municipio, the Palazzo Pitteri and the Hotel Duchi d’Aosta. A central point in the square is the Fountain of Mazzoleni, which dates back to 1750, as well as the Column of Emperor Charles VI, which recalls the history of the city.

Near the piazza there are also historic hotels such as the Grand Hotel Duchi d’Aosta, which opened in 1873, as well as modern hotels such as the Duchi Vis a Vis. This variety of accommodations complements the cultural experience in Trieste.

After the city visit to Trieste, the travelers continued their tour and visited the nearby Miramare Castle, which highlights the exciting history and impressive architecture of the region. Trieste remains a fascinating destination that immerses travelers in the past and cultural diversity of this unique city.
