Airport nightmare: plane is not allowed to land in Naples!
American Airlines faces various challenges that impact its international operations. One of the most widely discussed developments was the incident on June 2nd when flight AA780 from Philadelphia was diverted to Naples. The problem arose when the Boeing 787-9 used was not permitted to land in Naples due to a change of aircraft. Instead, the plane had to be rescheduled to Rome Focus reported.
Flight AA780 took off on time and crossed the Atlantic in just over eight hours. The background to the change was that a Boeing 787-8 was replaced by the larger Boeing 787-9, which was necessary for operational reasons. However, during the landing approach, the jet with the registration number N837AN had to turn towards Rome because the Naples airport authorities refused to allow it to land.
Impact of Boeing 787 delivery delays
The difficulties with the Boeing 787 are not limited to the Naples incident. American Airlines has announced it will temporarily suspend three European routes in the 2025 summer season due to Boeing 787 delivery delays. These routes include connections from Miami to Paris, Dallas to Frankfurt and New York to Madrid. These measures are aimed at those customers who are directly affected, and American Airlines will offer alternatives to facilitate travel plans, such as The Points Guy explained.
The airline had previously canceled routes such as Edinburgh, Hong Kong and Shannon, showing how deeply the supply bottlenecks are affecting international flight offerings. Long-haul flights are particularly affected after the operator retired older aircraft during the pandemic.
Future developments
Despite these challenges, American Airlines is planning significant changes in the near future. The airline was originally prepared to receive ten Boeing 787-9s in 2023, but this has been delayed. This also impacts the introduction of the new Flagship Suite in Business Class, which is set to replace First Class on certain Boeing 777-300ER aircraft. Additionally, the airline's first Airbus A321XLR will introduce the Flagship Suite in 2025 to serve first-class transcontinental routes.
In the meantime, American Airlines will continue to serve all European destinations, including a new route to Edinburgh. Other routes, such as Philadelphia to Rome and Dallas to London, will also have reduced frequencies.
