Royal wine from Gumpoldskirchen: The new insider tip for wine lovers!

Gumpoldskirchen, a picturesque town in the thermal region of the Vienna Woods, has established itself as a brand ambassador for the region with Königswein. This time-honored wine brand is the oldest protected wine brand in Austria and is produced as a jointly produced cuvée by ten winemakers from Gumpoldskirchen. The royal wine, consisting of the characterful Zierfandler and Rotgipfler grape varieties, represents not only high quality, but also the regionality of the wine-growing tradition.

“The royal wine symbolizes the identity of the Vienna Woods,” said Mayor Dagmar Handel (ÖVP). This appreciation for wine attracts numerous tourists to the region every year, which further highlights the close connections between viticulture and tourism in Lower Austria. State Governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner (ÖVP) underlined these aspects at an event in which the importance of wine for local tourism was emphasized.

Quality from the best locations

The grapes for the royal wine are harvested exclusively from the best locations in the thermal region. Only the healthiest and ripest grapes are used. The Rotgipfler, named for its reddish shoot tips, requires warm southern locations with calcareous soils. When optimally ripe, this wine is characterized by a full-bodied bouquet and a pleasant acidity.

The Zierfandler, also known as “late red”, develops a reddish color when ripening and has low demands on the soil, but prefers areas rich in limestone. This wine also has a pleasant acidity and a fine flower, which makes both varieties popular representatives of the region.

Tradition and creativity

Special attention is paid to tradition and creativity on the label of the royal wine. This was designed by elementary school students as part of a painting competition, which symbolizes the younger generation's connection to the wine tradition.

Michael Wollinger, Managing Director of Wienerwald Tourismus, describes the Königswein as a collaboratively created top product that is firmly rooted in the region. The wine is not only represented at important events, but is also very popular as a gift wine. Numerous cycle paths lead through Gumpoldskirchen and make the Heurigen an attractive culinary destination for visitors to the region.

The royal wine is therefore not only a symbol of quality and regionality, but also a real ambassador of the Vienna Woods, embodying both the tradition and creativity of the region. Further information can be found on the official website of the royal wine: Royal wine. The responsibility for marketing and promoting the wine also lies with the local tourism organizations, which are committed to strengthening viticulture in the region.
