Habitat in danger: Marius is fighting for his yurt in Chiemgau!

Chiemgau, Deutschland - Marius Diab has been living in a yurt for a decade, which he built from thrown away material himself. In recent years, the 36-year-old climber and tree nurse has emerged through a consumption strike, in the framework of which he lived fully from thrown away things for four years in order to draw attention to the problem of the waste of resources. A year ago he moved to Chiemgau to be closer to his four -year -old daughter.

The yurt, which is located 250 meters from the next village, is not in line with the building law regulations. The responsible building authority gave Diab until June 30th to find a new location. Otherwise he faces fines or even a compulsory evacuation. Marius reports that the employees of the building office could not offer him an alternative location for his yurt. The construction of a yurt is possible indoors or in a large garden under certain conditions, but not at its current location.

legal framework for yurts

In Germany, specific legal requirements apply to yurts. These are classified as "flying buildings" and are subject to strict building law requirements. Jurks usually have to comply with certain size and time requirements in order to remain free of approval. In many cases, yurts exceed these restrictions, which requires additional permits. When planning a yurt, there are therefore many aspects to be observed, such as the base area, the height and the selected materials, as well as the supply connections for electricity and water.

The yurts can cause special reactions among the population because they are considered unusual in Central Europe. The advantages of life in a yurt, such as low rental costs and flexibility in breakdown, are often counteracted by disadvantages such as the limited winter suitability. The integration of sanitary facilities and suitable insulation are frequent challenges that need to be overcome when planning.

The search for a new place

Marius Diab is now looking for a natural, quiet place that offers both access to infrastructure and a registration address. According to DIAB, many people are in similar legal situations, live in yurts, weigh or Tiny Houses and are affected by similar legal regulations. Diab hopes for a change in legislation, especially in times of housing shortage.

Interested parties can contact Marius at marius.diab@riseup.net if you know from a suitable place. Despite the challenges with which he is confronted, DIAB remains optimistic that there are people who can support him and that the legal framework may change.
