Leven Canyon is located in the Leven Canyon Regional Reserve, approximately 52 kilometers from Devonport. The next town is called Nietta.

Below I have recorded the exact location of the reserve where you will find the start of the hiking trail.

How do I get here?

The only way to get to Leven Canyon Walk is with your own transportation. This is because there is no public transport on this route.

If you are coming from Devonport or Launceston you should take Casta Road towards Nietta. From here take Loongana Road to the viewpoint. The road is paved up to the junction and is well maintained. Here it's just a short stretch of dirt road to get to the picnic area. Regardless, this road is pretty well graded and you can handle any type of vehicle.

The Leven Canyon Lookout Walk

Hiking distance: 1.9 km circular route
Duration: 1 hour
Altitude: 149 meters
Difficulty: Easy

The Leven Canyon Lookout Walk is rated as fairly easy. The path is very well maintained and if you first walk it anti-clockwise to the Cruickshanks lookout you avoid really steep climbs. However, note that the descent from Cruickshanks Viewpoint to Edge Viewpoint is quite steep and involves many steps. If that doesn't suit you, you can walk to the Cruickshanks lookout and simply return to the car park the same way.

However, I strongly recommend running the entire loop. It is a very scenic hike that wanders through rich forest terrain with many beautiful fern trees.

The Cruickshanks Lookout over Leven Canyon

The first section of this loop leads to Cruickshanks Viewpoint, the main viewpoint over the gorge. From here you'll get an aerial view of the River Leven and see how it has carved a deep gorge out of the mountainside. It truly is one of the wildest viewpoints in Tasmania and being able to reach it in under 15 minutes is simply incredible.

There is a short viewing platform that stretches across the gorge. Here you'll get a glimpse of this dramatic landscape and have the opportunity to take some great photos.

The circular route to Edge Lookout

If you feel like a steep descent, continue this loop by following the steps down to the Edge Viewpoint. This is another great viewpoint from a very similar angle, just much further down the canyon.
