Mawun Beach Kuta Lombok is one of the most picturesque beaches you will find on the Indonesian island of Lombok. Also known as Pantai Mawun, this beach is a wide bay of white sand that slopes into deep, sheltered turquoise waters.

Directions to Mawun Beach Kuta Lombok

Mawun Beach is about 20 minutes from the heart of Kuta Lombok. The best way to get here is to rent a motorbike in Kuta Lombok and drive here yourself. We paid 50,000 rupiah per day for a good scooter from the friendly owner of our homestay.

The best way to find Mawun Beach is to simply type “Pantai Mawun” or “Mawun Beach” into Google Maps and let Google guide you there. For your convenience, I have included a Mawun Beach Lombok map below.

From Kuta Lombok to Mawun Beach

Regarding the clear direction from Kuta Lombok to Mawun Beach, you just need to start driving on Jl. Mawun, which can be found at the intersection next to The Living Room Hostel on Kuta Lombok's main restaurant strip. This paved road is fairly well maintained and has few potholes to avoid.

From here you continue up the windy mountain roads, past a few viewpoints and the Kuta Lombok Bat Cave (Bangkang Cave), before descending to sea level where you will see a small sign pointing to Mawun Beach.

Like most beaches in the area, Mawun Beach Kuta Lombok charges a small entrance fee of 10,000 rupiah per motorcycle. This is pretty standard across the board.

What to Expect at Mawun Beach Kuta Lombok Indonesia

When you arrive, you have several options for where to park your motorcycle. Find a shady spot and walk down to the sandy beach. There are a few warungs that will happily let you park your motorbike for free since you have already paid the 10,000 rupiah entry fee.

Pantai Mawun is a wide bay with deep blue waters perfect for swimming. Since the bay is fairly protected by the headlands, there is little swell in the middle. However, there is still a spot for surfing at the eastern tip (more on that later).

I was honestly shocked at how empty Mawun Beach was. Apart from a few children selling bracelets and a few older local ladies working in the warungs, I was the only soul on the beach.

In fact, I found that this was my general experience when I toured Lombok. Once we were no less than 5 minutes from the main beat, the entire island opened up to a raw, local travel experience.

Plastic pollution in Indonesia

A regular spot on Indonesian beaches are piles of plastic waste. It's a universal problem, perhaps exacerbated by the contrasting beauty of this beautiful place. Before I set out to take some snapshots and fly the drone, I was inevitably approached by a 9-year-old bracelet seller who was fluent in English, Bahasa, Spanish and Indonesian. I convinced him to help me collect two large plastic bags and in return bought him a bracelet for 20,000 rupiah.

Mawun beach surf

If you're looking for the best surfing beaches in South Lombok, Mawun is probably not the beach for you. However, there is a surf break at Mawun Beach on the east side near the headland. The Mawun Beach surf spot is usually not the best place for beginners as it requires a bit of paddling out to a reef break. However, if you're looking for a quiet spot, it's worth a visit, especially if you're already on your way to the better-known beaches of Mawi or Selong Balanak.

MY ACCOMMODATION - Banana HomestayFor $9 per night you can get a double room with air conditioning and free breakfast. The WiFi here is fast and the owner is very friendly and accommodating. He gave me a free papaya from his garden every day. Although it is a bit off the main road the owner will sort you out with a motorbike for 50k a day.
