Everything you need to know before you hike to the rim of Mount Rinjani

Below you will find some frequently asked questions about the hike to the crater edge of Mount Rinjani. These are some of the latest information you will find from March 2022.

Hiking video to the Rinjani volcano

Here is a short video that Haylea made with some pictures that we made on our hike to the Rinjani volcanic edge.

This gives you a good idea of what to expect when you reach the crater.

Booking a trekking tour to the edge

To book a trekking tour, most hikers either come by and haggle at a price in Senaru.

This is great to save money, but can often be a hit-and-miss, because they don't really know what to expect. In addition, due to the small number of tourism numbers, most operators have been relying on bookings on online platforms such as Viator in recent years.

If you are looking for a serious and high-quality tour where everything is organized for you, including transport after and by Senggigi and an overnight stay in front of the Trek in Senaru, you can book a 2D1N trekking trip here.

This is a great tour with countless 5-star reviews. It contains:

  • Experienced trekking guide
  • Carrier to carry all the equipment
  • Entry permit for the Rinjani National Park
  • Food and unlimited water
  • Snacks
  • Tents, sleeping bags and isolate
  • Something to cover the mouth and face (to protect against dust)

This trekking tour I booked gave us plenty of food and water on the mountain. However, I was told that some cheaper tours save while eating. Another important factor is whether plastic waste is collected and removed during the tours.

Accommodation in Senaru in front of the Trek

Since the best trips to the crater from Senaru start, it is best to spend a night here before and after the hike. Below are my recommended options. (Note if you book the tour above, you will receive an overnight stay before the hike).

My Senaru Homestay: Tiu Kelep Homestay - this is literally opposite the Tiu Kelep and Sendang Gile waterfalls. The owner is super friendly, offers unlimited coffee and tea for free, breakfast and can also organize waterfall or rinjani trekking tours. A double room is the cheapest in Senaru at just $ 7 a night.

Cheap host family with a hot shower: Embun Rinjani Homestay - the second time in Senaru I stayed in Embun Homestay, which is right around the corner of the Tiu Kelep and Sendang waterfalls. This is also super inexpensive because you get a hot shower, large rooms and free breakfast at a ridiculously good price!

Has the mountain Rinjani closed for trekking in 2022?

Mount Rinjani Trekking is definitely not closed. While the way to the Mount Rinjani (summit) summit was closed for a long time, it has now been repaired and is open for hiking.

However, the new route is currently more dangerous than the previous route. This has caused the price to be shot up to the Rinjani summit.

Therefore, most people tend to book either from Tete Batu or Senaru from a trekking trip to the crater edge.

Update 2022: I hiked on the Rinjani crater edge for the first time in 2019. Many of the Rinjani hiking trails were closed for a few years (2018-2020). I keep this article up to date so that you can use it as a reliable guide for hiking on Lombok!

Mount Rinjani Trekking after the earthquake

As you can probably imagine, the trekking routes on the Rinjani mountain were badly damaged during the earthquake.

As a result, the families whose houses were destroyed also lost their income. Together with the devastating pandemic and the latest floods, this means that people on Lombok really need their help.

Tourism has not yet completely recovered, but is slowly increasing again. If you have planned a trip to Lombok or a hike to the Mount Rinjani volcanic edge, this is definitely the right time before the masses come back!

Can I climb Mount Rinjani without a guide?

Technically speaking, it is possible to hike to the crater rim of Mount Rinjani without a guide. However, you have to take your own food, water, tents and supplies with you. For several reasons, I would not recommend climbing Mount Rinjani without a guide.

  • Local families are dependent on trekking tours to make money
  • You have to pay 15,000 rupiah national park fee per person anyway
  • You will miss local knowledge and epic dishes prepared in the mountains
  • You have to wear your own supplies

What do I have to bring?

Your guides and carriers carry all the necessary utensils for camping and cooking. However, you must be responsible for bringing the following in a small bag of daily size.

  • Warm clothing for the top
  • Good shoes or boots
  • Camera or GoPro
  • Toilet articles
  • Sunscreen
  • Change of clothes

Mount Rinjani Crater Rim hiking guide

Here is a complete hiking guide to Mount Rinjani Crater Rim, who should answer all your questions about the hike.

Most of the guided tours to the crater edge last 2 days and 1 night. This gives you the opportunity to reach the edge at sunset, to spend the night and to descend again after an epic volcanic sunbird breakfast.

Price for the hike to the Rinjani crater in 2022

Depending on the quality of your trekking tour, the prices for the Rinjani crater edge of Senaru vary between 1.8 million and 3.5 million rupiah. If you have a larger group, you can also negotiate a cheaper price.

For those who are interested in Tete Batu trekking, you have to expect to pay a little more because this page has less hiking infrastructure.

I was told that some smaller trekking groups, based in Sembalun, demand less either to the summit or the crater. However, this depends heavily on how you can think of you, the size of the group and of course on the reputation and professionalism of the trekking company.

Mount Rinjani Trek difficulty

Trekking to the rim of crater does not require any technical climbing skills.

A generally fit person can reach the edge of Senaru in a hiking day. Although dusty, the path leaves and easy to walk. On the way down, however, it can get a little slippery when you swing down the mountain.

Rinjani height and height

The summit of Mount Rinjani is 3726 meters above sea level and is the second highest volcano in Indonesia.

However, Rinjanis Rand is considerably lower at 2639 m (8,658 feet).

The starting point, Senaru, is at around 650 meters, which means that you overcome almost 2000 meters of altitude in one day. It is a leg burner, but the view is worth it!

What awaits you on the hike to the crater edge of Mount Rinjani

The day begins early with its trekking leaders, who drive to the entrance to the national park.

Here they enter into a register and their guides figures for their entry permit, which should always be included in their tour. In front of them is a steep 7-hour ascent to the crater edge.

The climb

There are three main stops along the way where hikers can rest their legs. The first route is mostly in the thick jungle, where you can see the famous black monkeys. Depending on your pace, your guides and carriers will most likely stop on POS 2 to prepare a warm lunch, usually rice and vegetables.

According to POS 2 and shortly before Pos 3, about 5 hours after the start of the hike, they break out of the jungle and into a savanna -like landscape. In this section it can get pretty hot and the dust is a killer.

The last section is the steepest, but soon you will reach the crater edge, where you have an incredible view of the Lake Anak and the entire volcanic crater.

Camping on the rim of the Mount Rinjani

While you are busy taking photos, your guides and sponsors build up your campsite. Our guides seemed to have claimed the best place directly on the edge of the rinjani crater rim.

You have some of the best prospects when you walk around the way around the communication antenna. No trees block the view here.

The sunset on the Rinjani mountain is probably better than the sunrise, as the sun positions itself perfectly to illuminate the volcanic lake and set the cotton candy under them.

The descent back to Senaru

After you fell asleep under the Galactic night sky, you will probably be a little sore but undoubtedly still enthusiastic about experiencing the sunrise. Shortly afterwards we treated ourselves to a banana pancake breakfast before we went back to Senaru on the strenuous descent. Calculate about 4 hours for the entire descent.

The descent is not so exhausting, but it is much more difficult because they will undoubtedly slip and fall on the loose sandy floor. I found it easier to shut down an improvised light so as not to fall over.

Before you arrive again at the entrance to the national park, your guides cook another jungle lunch at one of the rest areas. This was the last time we saw our wearers who quickly rushed down the mountain, eagerly to see their families.
