Camping boom in Halle: Private gardens become a holiday oasis!
With the start of the camping season, Halle and the surrounding area has seen a notable increase in requests for tent and RV overnight accommodations. This phenomenon, observed since March 2025, results in the local service team receiving between 10 to 20 inquiries per week via email and telephone. However, many campers have to deal with a lack of official parking spaces in Halle. Therefore, the project “Space in the Garden? Campers Wait!” has become more important because it makes private areas, such as gardens and meadows, available as parking spaces for campers.
The project, which was started with the support of the state of Saxony-Anhalt, now enables four new hosts who have joined the project since the start of the season to offer numerous parking spaces. A total of around 42 private parking spaces are now available, spread across the entire city up to Lake Wallendorf. There are also 13 public camping, pitches and parking spaces in Halle and the surrounding area. The initiative shows that innovative solutions are being sought to meet the increased requirements.
Popularity of pitches
The popularity of the parking spaces on offer is clear from the example of the Sandanger tennis club, where over 70 vehicles with around 140 guests were counted in the first ten weeks since the start of the season. Halle, on the other hand, only has two official municipal parking spaces: the Fährstraße, which is open all year round, and the “Am Nordbad” campsite, which opened its doors in mid-May. Together, these two urban options only offer 19 caravan and seven tent sites.
The fluctuations in demand for campsites are not least due to the growing segment in the tourism sector in Saxony-Anhalt. Overnight stays at campsites in the region have increased by more than 46 percent since 2019. Especially the project “Space in the garden? Campers are waiting!” has established itself as an attractive solution that offers advantages for both hosts and campers. These private areas are often used according to the couch surfing principle, sometimes in return for donations or by helping out in the garden.
Tourist attractions in Saxony-Anhalt
Saxony-Anhalt is not only characterized by its camping opportunities, but is also known for its historical sights, cities worth seeing and the picturesque lake and river landscapes. The region is characterized by heathland and wine-growing areas, which make the stay particularly attractive for campers. A highlight is the “Road of Romanticism”, which connects castles, monasteries and palaces.
The state capital Magdeburg with its 230,000 inhabitants is an example of the change from an industrial city to a lively Elbe metropolis. Landmarks include the Gothic cathedral, where Emperor Otto I is buried, and the Modern Citadel, designed by Friedensreich Hundertwasser. Not to be forgotten is the Harz National Park, the first cross-border national park in Germany, which delights visitors with its dense forests and impressive landscapes.
In addition, the city of Halle, the largest city in Saxony-Anhalt, with its well-preserved old town, the Beatles Museum and the Handel Festival offers numerous sights for travelers. The Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg is one of the oldest universities in Germany and attracts many visitors every day. Wittenberg with the famous castle church, where Martin Luther posted his 95 theses in 1517, is also of historical importance.
The developments in Halle and the growing demand for campsites are not only a sign of changing travel trends, but also an opportunity to experience the cultural treasures of Saxony-Anhalt. The country offers numerous opportunities for campers looking for adventure and relaxation in a unique landscape.
