Savitri Temple Pushkar – Best Viewing Point in Pushkar

The Pushkar Savitri Temple on Ratnagiri Hill is a popular pilgrimage site for Hindus and a great viewing point for visitors to Pushkar.

Savitri Temple, also known as Savitri Mata, is a Hindu pilgrimage site dedicated to the goddess Savitri, who is enthroned on the peak of Ratnagiri Hill in Pushkar. It's also an excellent viewpoint, earned after a steep but relatively short 15-minute walk from the lake.

The Savitri Temple view overlooks the entire Pushkar oasis as well as the surrounding valley landscape and deserves its title for the best viewpoint in Pushkar.

How to get to Savitri Temple Pushkar

The Savitri Temple is a short 15-minute walk southwest of Pushkar Ghat. In fact, you can spot the temple on Ratnagiri Hill from most points in Pushkar.

In true Pushkar style, as soon as you arrive at the base of the hill, you'll notice stalls and vendors selling everything from chai to jewelry. The steep stairs start directly behind these vendors.

These stairs are large and steep. Apparently there are over 200 steps, which are an important part of the pilgrimage to this site for Hindus. So get there in time for sunrise or sunset and enjoy the view!

The Savitri Temple Cable Car

You are also likely to notice the Savitri Temple Ropeway or cable car that runs from the base of the hill. I was told the price is 90 rupees per person. However, this can apparently vary seasonally.

Honestly, I would recommend the walk instead of taking the cable car. Although it is steep, I firmly believe that viewpoints are more rewarding after a bit of sweat.

Cable car times

The cable car operates from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Consequently, you could shoot it for sunset, but you have to turn your legs if you want to enjoy the view of Savitri Temple at sunrise.

What to Expect at Savitri Mata Temple

After passing watching monkeys and getting increasingly better views as you climb, you soon reach the Savitri Mata temple at the top of the hill.

When you arrive, remember to take off your shoes. You can leave them near the entrance.

You are free to explore the temple and enjoy the views from here or walk a little further along the Ratnagiri ridge for incredible views over the camel-studded desert valley.

Entrance fee

There is no entry fee to visit the Savitri Temple in Pushkar. However, you can offer a donation at the entrance if you feel obliged. We were not asked or pressured to leave a donation but dropped 50 rupees as a goodwill gesture.

Hindu pilgrimage site

As mentioned above, this temple is a Hindu pilgrimage site dedicated to Lord Brahma's wife Savitri. The Savitri Mata Temple was built in 1687 and has stood the test of time. Inside the temple, you can also catch a glimpse of the 1300-year-old idols of Savitri and Gayatri.

Where to Stay in Pushkar – Accommodation Guide

With so many accommodation options in Pushkar, I can understand the frustration when booking. When choosing, I recommend finding a place that is close to the lake. This is because most of the activities in Pushkar are within walking distance of the lake. Since accommodation in Pushkar is plentiful and cheap, there's really little reason not to book a bed close to the action.

Where I stayed: Madpackers Pushkar This hostel made up my entire visit to Pushkar and the atmosphere fits the destination perfectly. It was named India's Best Hostel in 2019 by Hostelworld for its atmosphere, three terraces, a rooftop chill area and a yoga/camping terrace. To make things even better, dorm rooms cost around $6 per night. This is a no-brainer for me and one that I have no problem recommending.

Best Value Private Room: Varah Square Guest HouseOne of the few accommodation options in Pushkar without negative reviews. Close to the ghat with rooftop views of Pushkar and surrounding mountains. Budget rooms only cost around $5, while you can get a deluxe room with a view for $2 extra.
