Collins Cap is a mountain peak in Wellington Park, just outside Collinsvale, Tasmania. The short but steep hike to Collins Cap is extremely rewarding and can be completed by almost anyone with a decent level of fitness.
In this guide, I'll describe everything you need to know to hike to the summit of Collins Cap, including the beautiful Myrtle Forest Walk and a stop at Myrtle Forest Falls along the way.
Directions to Collins Cap Trailhead
The Collins Cap Trailhead begins at the Myrtle Forest Walk Track just outside Collinsvale, Tasmania. Expect a drive of approximately 24.5 kilometers (40 minutes) from Hobart. The best way to get here is to enter the pin below (it's accurate) into Google Maps.
But essentially you should head towards Collinsvale on Collinsvale Road before continuing onto Springdale Road at the fork. Continue on Springdale Road for a few minutes before reaching a signed turnoff onto Myrtle Forest Road (dirt). Continue on Myrtle Forest Road to the end where you will reach a dedicated parking lot large enough to accommodate approximately 10-12 vehicles.
Myrtle Forest Road is unpaved but in fairly good condition. However, there is little room to stop when oncoming traffic is approaching, so drive slowly. We managed the trip in our large motorhome without any problems.

The first section: Myrtle Forest Walk
The trail to Collins Cap begins at the Myrtle Forest Walk, a popular and very easy trail that is popular with families. The first section of the walk appears to follow an old road before reaching a small outdoor seating area. Right next to it you will also find a few information boards and a signposted forest entrance.

As you enter Myrtle Forest, you will be surrounded by beautiful temperate rainforest and many winding myrtle trees that make this route so famous. The Myrtle Forest Walk trail is fairly wide and mostly flat. About 1.2 kilometers from the parking lot you will reach the multi-tiered Myrtle Forest Falls.

Ascending Collins cap
Immediately to the right of Myrtle Forest Falls you will see the steep and narrow path that marks the start of the next section on the Collins Cap Walk. The climb also begins here and you gain around 300 meters in altitude over the next 2 kilometers until you reach the fire trail directly below Collins Cap. This is by no means a difficult section, just a little steep. This forest path is also well maintained and there is solid undergrowth for the duration of the climb.

You will find that you have to cross some gentle streams and eventually you will come to a fork that marks the path to Collins Bonnet. Take the right path here and continue uphill through the forest until you reach the cleared access road to the fire trail.

From here you have an excellent view of Collins Bonnet, the rocky 1246 meter high peak on the other side of the valley. The final stretch at Collins Cap begins on the other side of this fire trail. You begin climbing the final kilometer to the summit, gaining around 160 kilometers as you traverse increasingly rocky ground.

View from Collins Cap
The view from Collins Cap was one of my personal favorites in Wellington Park. In fact, the entire walk was probably my favorite due to the diversity and natural beauty of the walk.
Once at the summit, there is a large cairn where you can rest your legs and admire the panoramic views of Collinsvale, Collins Bonnet, the lush Derwent Valley and the entire Mount Wellington plateau.

Where to stay in Hobart
I have written a separate, comprehensive accommodation guide for where to stay in Hobart. But below are 3 of the top rated and most popular accommodation options for different budgets. They're a good place to start, but be sure to read the full guide before booking!
The area closest to most of Hobart's highlights is called Salamanca Place. This area has great restaurants and bars and is close to the markets, wharf, museums and Elizabeth Mall.
However, Hobart is a relatively small city with just over 200,000 residents, and as a result most accommodation options in the inner suburbs offer easy access to most of the highlights.
Best Mid-Range Hotel: The RivuletThe Rivulet is an impressive 19th-century mansion that is listed as a historical monument. It offers some of the best suites in Hobart without a ridiculous price tag.
The location is perfect and the accommodation includes the best rated breakfast in Hobart.

Best Budget Hostel: Montacute Boutique BunkhouseFor budget travelers and backpackers, Montacute is by far the best place to stay in Hobart. This is a great hostel that is considered to have the best atmosphere in the city.
Dorms are only $30 per night, which is a great value. Especially considering most other hostels are the same price or more!

Best Luxury Accommodation: The Grand ChancellorCentrally located on the waterfront overlooking Constitution Dock, the Grand Chancellor Hotel is one of the most prominent accommodation options in Hobart.
