20 years of the Circle of Friends: A celebration of Bruay-La-Buissière and its treasures!

On Monday, September 8, 2025, an important event of the Froendenberg-Bruay-la-Buissière Circle of Friends took place, celebrating the 20th anniversary of the collaboration. Part of the program included visiting key attractions in Bruay-La-Buissière, including the impressive Art Deco swimming pool, which is an outstanding example of 20th century hygienist architecture.

Built in 1935 under the direction of architect Paul Hanote, this swimming pool is the last Art Deco swimming pool in France. It was extensively renovated in 2009, with the work taking two years. The result of this renovation is described as admirable, attracting both locals and visitors who want to enjoy the communal facilities.

A historical ensemble

The Roger-Salengro Stadium Park, inaugurated in 1936, is another highlight in Bruay-La-Buissière. This ensemble has been a listed building since 1997 and, in addition to the summer pool, includes a wooded park, a music pavilion and various sports facilities. Over the years, the stadium park has established itself as a popular place for relaxation, leisure and meeting for miners and the general public.

Architects Paul Hanote and engineer René Le Sidaner developed the swimming pool with the aim of improving the living conditions of workers in the mining sector and creating a leisure and sports facility for all families in the mining area.

Cultural significance

The Circle of Friends event underlines not only the anniversary, but also the importance of the cultural and historical sites in Bruay-La-Buissière. The swimming pool in particular is now not only used as a sports facility, but is also an important cultural heritage that is reminiscent of the splendor of bygone times.

The examination of tree species in the surrounding park during the renovation shows the commitment to preserving the region's nature and cultural infrastructure, which is of great importance for both residents and athletes.
