Rarotonga Cross Island Walk on the Cook Islands
Rarotonga Cross Island Walk on the Cook Islands
The Rarotonga Cross Island Walk is one of the best hikes in the South Pacific. Even the most inexperienced hiker comes up there with a little caution
We stood in front of our hostel and stared into the morning sky. It had rained all night and the ominous clouds were still threatening to thwart our plans. Adrienne, the hostel owner, had already warned us to make the Rarotonga Cross Island Walk.
After the nightly flood, it would be much too slippery, she told us. After three days of lazing, however, we wanted some activity. Already in our hiking equipment we reluctantly wanted to put on beach clothing again and spend another day with it not to do much.
And so we went up to the three -hour trip to Adrienne's will up to the 'The Needle' (413m) and down to the other end of the island.

Fortunately, contrary to Adrienne's rain, the rain had not reached the floor through the dense leaves, so that we found the hike to be relatively simple and safe and reached the summit in just one hour. The view was like from Jurassic Park (without the murderous dinosaurs): absolutely breathtaking.
Here is a foretaste of what we saw.

We spent thirty minutes on the summit, soon a group of other hikers joined. The diversity of people on the summit was striking: hikers of different ages, body construction and fitness levels.
In terms of reward and effort, the Rarotonga Cross Island Walk must be one of the best hikes in the South Pacific. It requires a certain amount of fitness and coordination, but even the most inexperienced hiker can climb up there with a little care.

The cook islands are great all year round, with minimal seasonal fluctuations. In general, the drier months, November to April, are moisture.
The best season for visiting the cook islands is September and October if it is less damp and cooler. Be aware that due to the mountainous country of Rarotonga it can often rain without warning, so always pack a waterproof jacket.
