About Picnic Island Tasmania
Picnic Island Cost: Seasonal. Check updated price.
Picnic Island is a privately owned island that offers beachfront cabin-style accommodation for up to ten people.
Staying on Picnic Island is truly a secluded, private island experience. Although the island is just minutes from Coles Bay, it feels like you're miles away from the rest of the world. On just under one hectare there is enough space for activities and exploration, but still retains a secluded charm.
To offer this exclusive, private island accommodation experience, booking is only available for all five cabin-style bedrooms. As a result, those who choose to stay here will have the entire island to themselves!

Where is Picnic Island and how to get there?
Picnic Island is located on the Freycinet Peninsula, less than a kilometer from the shores of Coles Bay. It faces Muirs Beach to the north and offers uninterrupted views of the mighty Hazards mountain range to the east.
As I mentioned earlier, visitors can only reach Picnic Island if they have booked accommodation here. A pre-arranged water taxi transfer is included in the booking and departs from the Garnet Ave boat ramp in Coles Bay. The drive to Picnic Island takes less than 10 minutes and the staff is very helpful.

The staff are really helpful and informative and will give you all the knowledge you need for a stay on Picnic Island. Accommodation on Picnic Island offers five small cabin-style rooms on the jetty side of the island. These rooms are quite spacious and immaculately decorated in a rustic island style.
The bedrooms are equipped with king-size or single beds depending on the booking. Stepping out of your room onto a boardwalk overlooking the ocean is truly an incredible experience. I'll be honest when I tell you that staying on Picnic Island made me feel like I was in the Maldives, not Tasmania!

Additionally, guests on the island have private access to a large living area with a stunning fireplace as well as a fully equipped kitchen. Here you will find everything you need to cook and prepare meals, including a refrigerator, gas hobs, oven, full sink, microwave, toaster, sandwich press and all cutlery and utensils.
There are also two toilets and even a hot-water rainfall shower, making it easy to forget that you're going off-grid on a tiny private island.

What to do on Picnic Island Tasmania?
While Picnic Island is a dream location for luxury travelers, there is also plenty to do in terms of adventure! And don't worry about the weather, there are great things to do all year round!
Below are some of the things you can expect when staying at Picnic Island Tasmania.
Explore the island's hiking trails
While it won't take you long to walk around this small island, a walk on Picnic Island is a great way to experience the tranquility of the Freycinet Peninsula from the water. The prime location means visitors have perfect views across the water to the pink granite perils and sparkling Coles Bay.

Discover penguins and seabirds
You may be surprised to hear that Picnic Island is home to its own population of penguins and seabirds. If you look closely, you can spot signs of these cheeky birds all over the island.
The penguin colony returns to Picnic Island every evening after their daily hunt. To safely spot them, the owners have provided flashlights with red lenses so as not to disturb their natural behavior.
Swimming & Snorkeling
The Freycinet peninsula is known for white sandy beaches and crystal clear waters. So, as you might expect, one of the best things you can do here is explore the underwater world. Visitors will find snorkels and fins in their rooms, so you don't even need to bring your own equipment! For divers, there are also plenty of abalone and crabs that you can collect right by the water.
Go fishing
If you're the type of person who would rather wet a leash than get your stuffed animals wet, then you're in luck. Visitors will also find fishing rods and equipment hidden in the sheds. So, channel your inner Rex Hunt and grab some flatheads or squid from the dock.
Relax, unwind and enjoy world-class sunsets on the island
Tasmania's east coast and the Freycinet Peninsula in particular enjoy some of the most vibrant and breathtaking sunrises and sunsets in the world. So if you're staying on Picnic Island to relax and unwind, pour yourself a glass of Pinot Noir, head down to the deck and watch the sun paint the dangers with fire each evening.
