Discover the Alps: Lecture on the most famous Mont Blanc tour!

On Tuesday, February 3rd, the Lübeck section of the German Alpine Club invites you to an exciting travel café. The highlight of the event is a lecture by DAV board member Stephan Bieling, who will report on the famous “Tour du Mont Blanc”. The event takes place in the DAV Lübeck office, on the 1st floor of the Lübeck Gymnastics Association, at Possehlstrasse 5 and is open to both members and guests. Further information can be found on the DAV Lübeck website: www.davluebeck.de.

The “Tour du Mont Blanc” stretches over an impressive length of 160 kilometers and covers around 10,700 meters of altitude. The hiking route leads through three countries: France, Italy and Switzerland. This legendary long-distance hike around the Mont Blanc massif offers breathtaking alpine landscapes and spectacular passes. In his lecture, Bieling plans to share personal impressions and experiences from this challenging tour and to give his listeners insights into the planning as well as the challenges and experiences during the hike.

The route of the Tour du Mont Blanc

The starting point of the tour is in Chamonix, a popular destination surrounded by the highest peaks in the Alps. The route leads towards the Italian border to Courmayeur and crosses the Val Veny, which boasts unforgettable views of Mont Blanc and the adjacent glaciers. A special highlight of the tour is Lac Blanc at an altitude of around 2,350 meters, from whose banks hikers can enjoy a breathtaking view of the surrounding mountains.

The last stage of the hike ends at Col de la Balme, where Mont Blanc is seen from a different perspective. The route is peppered with cultural highlights, including traditional mountain huts in Italy and Switzerland, where both Italian pasta dishes and Swiss cheese fondue are offered. The varied landscape includes scree fields, steep mountain passes, quiet forest paths and picturesque alpine villages.

Ecological challenges and sustainable tourism

While the Tour du Mont Blanc is considered one of the most beautiful hiking destinations, mass tourism in the Alps also brings with it ecological and social challenges. Among other things, urban sprawl caused by tourist infrastructure such as parking spaces and lifts leads to significant environmental impairment. In recent decades, the region has struggled with an increase in noise and air pollution, sometimes exceeding levels in urban areas.

In this context, the idea of “soft tourism” is becoming increasingly important. Initiatives such as “Nature and Life Bregenzerwald” actively promote a better connection between agriculture, business and tourism. Local products are preferred, while holidaymakers are encouraged to use public transport and avoid environmentally harmful activities. These efforts aim to preserve the natural way of life in the Alps while promoting the cultural values of the region.

The event on February 3rd not only offers an opportunity to learn more about the fascinating “Tour du Mont Blanc”, but also stimulates an important discussion about the future of hiking tourism and the responsible use of this unique natural landscape.
