Bicycle travelers in need: ÖBB railjets hardly have any space for bikes!
Travelers from Munich face a big problem on their way to Italy. Reported on June 18, 2025 tz.de that the new ÖBB Railjet trains on the Munich-Innsbruck-Bozen-Verona-Bologna route only offer limited capacity for bicycle travelers. CEO Andreas Matthä has described the Railjets as a “first-class travel experience” with increased comfort. Nevertheless, there are significant restrictions for cyclists, especially on the last weekend in July, when no two bicycle parking spaces are available on the trains from Munich to Rovereto.
Compared to the previous Eurocity trains, which offered space for up to 40 bicycles, the new Railjets only have six bicycle parking spaces. This situation forces many bicycle travelers to seek alternative transportation options. An ADFC expert has already indicated that they could consider private bus companies in the Garda region to transport their bikes.
Capacity and requirements for bicycle transport
The Railjet trains reach speeds of up to 230 km/h and have 532 seats. An ÖBB spokesman explained that the low number of bicycle spaces is the result of a compromise between the provision of bicycle spaces and seats. While the demand for seats is high all year round, bicycle spaces are often only in high demand seasonally. It is also not technically possible to attach additional bicycle transport trolleys to modern trains.
The ÖBB has also set specific rules for the transport of bicycles. Bicycles that exceed certain dimensions may only be transported in special luggage compartments. The requirements include:
- Länge über 185 cm
- Höhe über 110 cm
- Breite über 60 cm
- Reifengröße ab 28 Zoll
- Reifenbreite mehr als 4,2 cm
- Maximalgewicht von 30 kg
Tandems, recumbent bikes and bicycle trailers are also affected. Reservations are not possible for the transport of these bicycles and only one bicycle reservation per ticket can be made. This reservation should be printed and clearly visible on the bike to facilitate ticket checks. In addition, electrically powered vehicles are not allowed to be transported, which further complicates the situation.
The challenges for bicycle travelers on the popular route to Italy have increased significantly. Many now have to get creative to organize their trips despite the restrictions.
