Netherlands raises speed limit on motorways: now 130 km/h again!

The Netherlands, known for its picturesque windmills, idyllic canals, colorful tulips and delicious cheese, is set for a change to its highways. The speed limit, which until today was 100 km/h during the day (6 a.m. to 7 p.m.), will be increased again to 130 km/h by the Dutch government. This is part of a comprehensive coalition agreement that will see a return to previous regulations introduced in 2020 due to environmental measures to reduce nitrogen emissions. TheWest reports that this innovation will be implemented primarily on busy routes in tourist regions.

The federal government has already increased the speed limit on the following motorway sections, which total 86 kilometers in length:

  • A6 Amsterdam – Emmeloord: 18 km zwischen Lelystad-Nord und der Ketelbrücke
  • A7 Groningen – Amsterdam: 44 km zwischen Lorentzsluizen und Stevinsluizen (Ijsselmeerdamm)
  • A7 Groningen – Bunde/D: 24 km zwischen Winschoten und dem Grenzübergang Bunde

Planned expansion of the speed limit

Transport Minister Madlener plans to extend the speed limit to several more motorway sections. In the future, a 31-kilometer-long section of the A37 between Holssloot and the Zwartemeer border crossing in the direction of Emsland will also be subject to the higher speed limit, with implementation planned for next summer. ADAC points out that comprehensive analyzes of pollutant emissions and noise protection will be carried out before implementation.

The new arrangement allows travelers to get to their destination faster while still enjoying the beautiful landscape of the Netherlands. Unlike before, this could increase the attractiveness of road trips as the highways pass directly past popular tourist destinations. The local economy could benefit from this regulation, especially in rural areas and tourist hotspots.

In summary, the return to the 130 km/h speed limit on Dutch motorways during the day is not only a transport policy decision, but could also significantly improve the range of tourist activities and accessibility in the Netherlands. The Netherlands therefore remains an attractive travel destination for tourists from all over the world.
