Netherlands raise speed on highways: now 130 km/h again!

Emmeloord, Niederlande - The Netherlands, known for their picturesque windmills, idyllic canals, colorful tulips and delicious cheese, are faced with changes on the highways. The speed limit, which was still 100 km/h during the day (6 a.m. to 7 p.m.), is again increased by the Dutch government to 130 km/h. This is part of a comprehensive coalition agreement that provides for a return to the previous regulations that were introduced in 2020 due to environmental protection measures to reduce nitrogen emissions. Derwesten reports that this innovation is particularly implemented on busy routes in tourist regions.

The Federal Government has already raised the speed limit on the following motorway sections, which make up a total length of 86 kilometers:

  • A6 Amsterdam-Emmeloord: 18 km between Lelystad-Nord and the Ketel Bridge
  • A7 Groningen - Amsterdam: 44 km between Lorentzluizen and Stevinsluizen (Ijsselmeerdamm)
  • A7 Groningen - Bund/D: 24 km between Winschoten and the border crossing Bunde

planned expansion of the speed limit

Transport Minister Madlener plans to expand the speed limit to several further motorway sections. In the future, a 31 -kilometer section of the A37 between Holssloot and the Zwartemeer border crossing towards Emsland will also be provided with the higher speed limit, with the implementation being considered for the coming summer. ADAC pointing out that comprehensive analyzes are carried out on pollutant emissions and noise protection.

The new regulation enables travelers to get to their goal faster while they can enjoy the wonderful landscape of the Netherlands at the same time. Unlike before, this could increase the attractiveness for road trips, as the highways lead directly past popular tourist destinations. The local economy could benefit from this regulation, especially in rural areas and tourist hotspots.

In summary, it can be said that the return to the speed limit of 130 km/h on Dutch motorways is not only a traffic policy decision during the day, but also could significantly improve the range of tourist activities and accessibility in the Netherlands. The Netherlands remain an attractive travel destination for tourists from all over the world.
