Traffic jam chaos threatens: vacation to the Netherlands becomes an adventure!
Holidaymakers from North Rhine-Westphalia should plan for longer travel times and traffic jams when traveling to the Netherlands in summer 2025. Major events and construction sites make traveling difficult.

Traffic jam chaos threatens: vacation to the Netherlands becomes an adventure!
In North Rhine-Westphalia, the Netherlands is very popular as a nearby holiday destination. Many people use the short travel times of one to three hours to explore various destinations in the neighboring country. With May coming, several holidays and long weekends are just around the corner, which are ideal for short trips. Especially now that the summer holidays in North Rhine-Westphalia are about to begin, numerous holidaymakers are drawn to Holland.
However, there is important information for travelers: From May to October 2025, the Dutch authority Rijkswaterstaat will carry out extensive renovation work on the motorways. These construction projects particularly affect the A1, A4 and the A10 motorway ring road. Drivers face closures and diversions lasting months, which can cause significant delays.
Traffic chaos when traveling to Amsterdam
Specifically, the A1 between Watergraafsmeer and Diemen will be completely closed in the east from May 9th to 26th, 2025. During this time, traffic will be redirected to the already heavily used routes A2 and A9. These diversions can prove particularly problematic for travelers, especially if major events are also taking place during this peak travel season.
The most important events include the 750th anniversary of Amsterdam from June 21st to 24th and the NATO summit, which will be held between June 24th and 26th. Both the city's anniversary and the NATO summit attract hundreds of thousands of visitors and could lead to further closures of individual highway sections.
Alternative travel options and tips
Travelers from NRW should therefore prepare well and consider alternative options. The rail connections between North Rhine-Westphalia and the Netherlands are an option, even if restrictions must be expected at Amsterdam Zuid station as part of the track work. Holidaymakers are advised to allow more travel time, especially on the routes around the A1, A4, A9 and A10.
It is also recommended to use the digital warning systems and the traffic information from the “Vaststaan oder meebewegen” campaign. Anyone who has the opportunity to postpone their trips to the region until late autumn should consider doing so. For your summer vacation in 2025, it is advisable to be patient or develop a plan B to make your journey to Holland as pleasant as possible.
