Tourism continues to boom: overnight stays reach record high!
On October 2, 2025, the Tourism Committee discussed the current annual tourism report, which shows significant progress in the Austrian tourism sector. The report documents that the number of overnight stays will reach a new high of 154.3 million in 2024. This shows that the tourism sector continues to be a thriving economic sector, even if it is struggling with rising costs and a strained profitability situation. Peter Laimer from Statistics Austria and Oliver Fritz from WIFO were available to answer any questions the committee members had about the content. Oliver Fritz noted that Austria is slowly working its way out of recession and expects the economy to bottom out in 2025. This recovery should be largely driven by consumption. In addition, a slight increase in overnight stays in tourism is forecast for the coming year, accompanied by an increase in prices and an increase in demand for workers.
Committee decisions
The Tourism Committee unanimously took note of the tourism report before it is discussed for the upcoming plenary session. Several motions for resolutions from the opposition, which concern, among other things, the fight against fake reviews on online platforms, reforms for the tourism country and the protection of glaciers, were initially postponed with the votes of the coalition parties. This shows that there are still some differences regarding the future direction and important issues in the tourism sector.
