Holiday allowance 2025: Every second person uses it for travel and relaxation!

A current survey by Deniz Bank and the opinion research institute INTEGRAL shows that around half of employees in Austria will use their vacation money for travel. A total of 53 percent of respondents plan to spend the money on vacation activities, which represents an increase compared to last year. This is good news at a time when many people's financial situation is being strained by inflation and rising costs of living. The study was carried out in April 2025 and surveyed 1,000 employees and pensioners between the ages of 16 and 75.

A third of those surveyed say they save vacation money in order to build up a financial cushion, with younger people under 30 particularly belonging to this group. According to the survey, 60 percent see the additional money as a way to ease financial burdens. However, another 17 percent use it to reduce existing debts or pay bills. In addition, 40 percent use vacation money to “make ends meet,” while 19 percent invest in their household or living costs.

Demographic differences

The use of holiday pay shows clear differences depending on age and income group. Older people and those with higher incomes are more likely to use the money for travel. Pensioners in particular are investing more in relaxation and travel. This suggests that the financial situation of respondents is strongly influenced by demographic factors. Only 10 percent rate their financial situation as very good, while 39 percent rate it as rather good. A positive assessment is particularly evident among respondents with an income of over 4,500 euros per month and those with higher education.

In addition, 11 percent of those surveyed plan to invest part of their vacation money in securities, which primarily affects men and better educated people. Fulfilling special wishes with vacation money also annoys 50 percent of those surveyed. These results highlight the multifunctional role of vacation pay, which is used not only for vacation but also for basic financial needs and precautions.

DenizBank AG emphasizes the importance of holiday pay, especially as a security buffer in challenging times. This survey shows that, especially in economically uncertain times, many people rely on this special payment to finance their leisure activities and to relieve financial pressure.
