Albufeira introduces strict code of conduct for tourists!
From July 2025, new rules for tourists will come into force in the popular Algarve city of Albufeira. The city's code of conduct, which was approved by the city council on May 20, aims to beautify the cityscape and curb excessive behavior by vacationers. This is reported by portugalnews. The code itself is expected to come into force after its publication in the Official Gazette and is supported by Mayor José Carlos Rolo, who highlights an approval of about 69% during the public consultation period.
The new guidelines include strict dress codes. Wearing bikinis and swimsuits is prohibited outside of beaches, hotel complexes and adjacent parking lots. Men must wear at least one shirt, while women must also wear pants or skirts to maintain public decency. Violations of these regulations can result in severe fines, which can range between 300 and 1,500 euros.
Rules for order and hygiene
In addition to dress codes, the code also includes provisions regulating the general behavior of tourists. It prohibits the public consumption of alcohol as well as urinating and spitting in public. Sexual acts in public areas are also prohibited. Violators face fines of up to 1,800 euros for complete exposure or inappropriate behavior.
The city police and other police authorities will monitor compliance with the new rules. This is intended not only to combat the negative image of tourism in Albufeira, but also to promote harmony between tourists and locals. Albufeira is a popular destination for tourists, particularly from the UK, due to its party scene, but has suffered from inappropriate behavior in the past.
Once the code is approved, an awareness and information phase is planned before actual fines are imposed. The mayor is confident that the regulations can be implemented “this summer” and plans to inform the public about the specific regulations right at the beginning of the summer season.
The new rules of conduct in Albufeira are part of a broader effort by the municipality to maintain public hygiene and sustainably regulate the behavior of tourists. This could be an important step in ensuring a positive experience for visitors and residents alike.
Visitors traveling to Albufeira from July 2025 should therefore find out about the new rules in advance to avoid unpleasant surprises.
