New law in Turkey: Getting up on a plane can be expensive!

Stricter regulations for airline passengers now apply in Turkey. The new regulation UOD-2025/01, which came into force on May 2, 2025, stipulates that premature removal of the seat belt after landing will no longer be tolerated. Passengers who stand up when the seatbelt sign is illuminated will have to expect a report in the future. However, the exact amount of the possible penalty has not yet been determined. These measures to protect safety on flights are implemented by the General Directorate of Civil Aviation (SHGM).

Cabin crew are required to report “passengers traveling irregularly” to the aviation authorities. This includes not only getting up early, but also opening the luggage compartments before reaching the parking position, which is also strictly prohibited. Turkish Airlines has already started making new announcements to warn passengers of the consequences of their behavior.

Safety comes first

A SHGM spokesperson emphasized that passenger safety is the top priority. The new regulations aim to prevent accidents when getting out. In particular, the risk of falling luggage or jerky movements of the aircraft should be minimized. These security measures are the result of similar efforts already implemented in many countries to increase aviation safety.

With the new regulations, the Turkish aviation authority is responding to incidents in the past and calling for greater compliance with safety regulations. As part of this initiative, targeted warnings are also issued by cabin crew.

The introduction of these measures is widely seen as a step in the right direction to better protect both passengers and crew during flights. Violating the new regulations not only threatens possible fines, but also disruptive effects on flight operations.

Turkish airlines, led by Turkish Airlines, are asked to strictly enforce these regulations and ensure that passengers are informed of the serious consequences of their behavior. It is therefore necessary to create awareness of the safety procedures in order to guarantee smooth operations on board.
