Overcrowded dream destinations: Where Europe's tourists flock like never before!
Today, an analysis by the European Commission shows that Mallorca is the most crowded tourist destination in Europe. Loud 20 minutes Several criteria for measuring the so-called “tourism pressure” were examined. This includes the ratio of tourists to residents as well as the number of overnight stays per square kilometer.
The Balearic island has fewer than 1 million inhabitants and recorded an impressive 51 million overnight stays last year. This leads to enormous tourism pressure of 14,064 overnight stays per square kilometer and 54 overnight stays per inhabitant. The peak season for Mallorca is in July and August, which explains the rush of travelers during this time.
Popularity of the holiday island
Like the data from Statista show, Mallorca is also one of the most popular holiday islands for Germans. It belongs to the Spanish archipelago of the Balearic Islands, which also includes Menorca, Ibiza, Cabrera and Formentera. Almost 70 percent of all trips to the Balearic Islands occur in Mallorca, which illustrates the island's dominance in tourism. In 2022, over 4.4 million German air travelers traveled to Mallorca, supplemented by around 1.4 million cruise passengers who used the port of Palma de Mallorca, one of the largest cruise ports in Europe.
Revenue from tourism amounted to around 12.2 billion euros in 2022. With around 1,800 accommodation establishments, the accommodation landscape on Mallorca is diverse in order to meet the high number of visitors. Between June and August in particular, the average bed occupancy rate is an impressive 90 percent, which underlines the popularity of this time among holidaymakers.
Activities and weather conditions
The island not only offers a variety of leisure options for party enthusiasts, but also for those seeking peace and quiet and active vacationers. Particularly noteworthy are the pleasant weather conditions, with temperatures reaching up to 26 degrees Celsius in August. In the months from June to August, rainfall is rare and the hours of sunshine per day are over ten.
The European Commission analysis also identifies other overcrowded destinations in Europe, with Zakynthos, Greece, and Paris, France also recording high overnight numbers. However, alternative locations with less tourism pressure have also been identified for travelers wanting to escape the crowds.
