Innsbruck celebrates tourism record: 1.7 million overnight stays in winter!

The final winter balance for the Innsbruck region is now available and shows positive results in terms of overnight stays and guest arrivals. Information from Top Tirol According to Peter Paul Mölk, Obmann von Innsbruck Tourism, who last season, described the past, but gratifying.

The winter season traditionally started with festive Advent markets in December. This month turned out to be particularly strong, while January was stable. However, a decline in the overnight number was found in February.

rising numbers

A total of 1.7 million overnight stays were registered in the past winter season, which corresponds to an increase of six percent compared to the previous year. The number of arrivals was 710,000 guests, which is equivalent to an increase of five percent. These positive developments are also noticeable among the most important markets:

  • Germany: +5%
  • Austria: +5%
  • Switzerland: +2%

The growth in teleutely markets are particularly outstanding. The United States recorded an increase of 19 percent, China follows 17 percent, while Poland with 29 percent and Australia even increases with 46 percent. The Australian overnight stays almost doubled, which comes to eleven of the most important countries of origin.

challenges from Italy

In contrast to the positive trends, Italy was the only exception, since a decline of seven percent was found in the overnight stays compared to the previous year. Such developments could make it necessary for official and operational measures.

Important information on data collection comes from Statistics Austria , which is recorded as part of the accommodation statistics. These are reported to the respective municipality by commercial and private accommodation companies. The reporting obligation applies to Austrian communities with at least 1,000 overnight stays over several years.

The data from the monthly overnight statistics are published approx. 25 days after the end of the report, while the final results are available around a month later. In addition, free overnight stays with acquaintances and relatives are not included in these results, which corresponds to a quarter of the overall soft.

Overall, the balance for Innsbruck shows that despite the isolated decline, the winter season provides a positive picture. This could set the course for future developments in the tourism sector in the region.
