Innsbruck celebrates tourism record: 1.7 million overnight stays in winter!

The final winter balance for the Innsbruck region is now available and shows positive results in terms of overnight stays and guest arrivals. Information from Top Tyrol Peter Paul Mölk, chairman of Innsbruck Tourism, described the past season as mixed but positive.

The winter season traditionally started with festive Advent markets in December. This month turned out to be particularly strong, while January was stable. However, a decline in the number of overnight stays was noted in February.

Increasing numbers

A total of 1.7 million overnight stays were registered in the last winter season, which corresponds to an increase of six percent compared to the previous year. The number of arrivals was 710,000 guests, an increase of five percent. These positive developments are also noticeable in the most important source markets:

  • Deutschland: +5%
  • Österreich: +5%
  • Schweiz: +2%

The growth in long-distance markets is particularly outstanding. The USA recorded an increase of 19 percent, China follows with 17 percent, while Poland rose at 29 percent and Australia even rose at 46 percent. Australian overnight stays have almost doubled, making Australia the eleventh most important country of origin.

Challenges from Italy

In contrast to the positive trends, Italy was the only exception, as there was a seven percent decrease in overnight stays compared to the previous year. Such developments could make regulatory and operational measures necessary.

Important information on data collection comes from Statistics Austria, which records monthly arrivals and overnight stays as part of the accommodation statistics. These are reported to the respective municipality by commercial and private accommodation providers. The reporting requirement applies to Austrian communities with at least 1,000 overnight stays over several years.

The data from the monthly overnight stay statistics will be published approximately 25 days after the end of the report, while the final results will be available around a month later. In addition, free overnight stays with friends and relatives are not included in these results, which corresponds to around a quarter of the total overnight stays.

Overall, the balance sheet for Innsbruck shows that, despite isolated declines, the winter season presents a positive picture. This could set the course for future developments in the region's tourism sector.
