(Review) Best Daintree Crocodile Tour in Cairns/Cape Tribulation

Do you need help with the selection of the best DAINTREE crocodil tour or cruise between Cairns and Cape Tribulation? Read this honest report with tips and insights into how you can do the best of your Daintree crocodilour!

The Dintree Regenwald, which belongs to the World Natural Heritage, is the oldest in the world. This ancient ecosystem houses a unique variety of iconic Australian wild animals, including of course the Australian salt water crocodile.

The Daintree River is one of the best places in Australia to watch a Salty in the wild. However, it can be difficult to recognize yourself. Fortunately, there are several great local providers who offer Daintree crocodil tours and cruises and offer a safe, sustainable and entertaining opportunity to observe crocodiles near Cairns, Port Douglas and Cape Tribulation.

In this short guide, I present my favorite crocodile cruise with Daintree and Solar Whisper. I will go into a little detail why I think you are the best and a brief review and a summary of my crocodile experience with photos.

Selection of the best daintree crocodile tour

If you are looking for a crocodile cruise near Cairns or Port Douglas, you may be surprised that there are absolutely a lot of tour operators!

My favorite and one of the top rated on the Daintree River is a ride with Solar Whisper. These boys are the only emission-free daintree crocodil tour in the Daintree. Your boats are solar companies and use electric motors, which means less pollution and of course a quieter drive with much less effects on the crocodiles.

Below are a few reasons why I think they are the best.

  • electric motors - no emissions, no loud petrol engine sound
  • greater chance to see a crocodile because it is not frightened by the engines
  • one of the cheapest daintree crocodile tours
  • The office is located cheaply next to the Daintree ferry-a perfect stopover while waiting
  • Great comment and Spotting Guides
Book now: 1 hour Solar Whisper Wildlife Spotting ($ 30 online)

As you can see, I am a fairly big fan of Daintree Wildlife and Crocodile Cruises from Solar Whisper. I actually went out with you twice! I would recommend booking online to secure a place.

About the Solar Whisper Daintree Crocodile Cruise

How do I get here

The Solar Whisper Daintree Crocodile Cruise drives off the large parking lot next to the Daintree River Ferry. This is about 122 kilometers of Cairns (1 hour 45 minutes) or 67 kilometers from Port Douglas (1 hour).

To get here, follow the Cairns to the Cape Tribulation Drive, which is also known as Great Barrier Reef Drive. This is one of the most scenic trips in Australia and definitely one that you should add to your FNQ Bucket list!

Die Solar Whisper Boats

If you have booked online in advance, you only have to check in at the office switch after your arrival. The times for crocodile and wildlife tours vary depending on the season, but when we were there, there were options for excursions at 9:30 a.m., 10:45 a.m., 11:45 a.m., 2:15 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.

The solar whisper daintree boats are fantastic. They are flat river boats with an electric motor and a sun roof for shadows. The great thing about these excursions is that it is not overcrowded boats, but rather an experience in small groups.

My experience on the Solar Whisper Daintree Crocodile Tour

If you would rather surprise this DAINTREE crocodile watching tour, I would suggest simply book a trip and skip this part. For those who are interested in what to expect and what they could see on the Daintree, this is a summary of my recent experiences.

On our last visit to the Daintree, we selected the earliest crocodile and wildlife cruise at 9:30 a.m. because it fits best to our trip to Cape Tribulation.

Wildlife observation

Our guide, Marc Peter, was super informative and a really good spotter. Less than five minutes away from the pontoon, he had already pointed out a large python that hung high up on the canopy.

Marc pointed out that the time of this trip was great for us because the sky was clear and the flood was quite low. We discovered our first crocodile, a 3 meter long female that only sunbathed on the shore a few minutes after the Python. Since Solar Whisper has a flat floor boat with an electric motor, we could get the crocodiles much closer to without disturbing them in their natural habitat.

Only a few minutes upstream we were lucky enough to see several native birds, including a heron, a Papuan frog mouth, two kingfishers and many birds of prey that flew over us.

The main attraction of our Daintree crocodile cruise was Scarface, the dominant male of the Daintree River. Experts appreciate this 4.5 meter long salt water crocodile at over 70 years!

Marc explained to us that there is a very strict hierarchy in these river systems. The dominant male crocodile is the only one that may mate, but is sometimes challenged by younger crocodiles.

We also managed to discover two more female crocodiles on our Daintree cruise, as well as a few very small baby crocodiles and a series of crab types and a few bike ducks when we came into one of the closer streams.

Overall, my experience on the Solar Whisper Crocodile Tour was really pleasant down the Daintree. I am not sure whether we were very lucky or whether it is normal to see such a variety of biodiversity on these trips. However, because of my experience, I would recommend this crocodile cruise to anyone who is planning a trip to Far North Queensland!

Tips to make the best of a crocc cruise in Cairns and Cape tribulation

still in the planning phase of a trip to the Daintree? Here are a few tips that will help you make the best of a crocodile boat tour and maximize your chances of discovering one!

  • seasons - crocodiles are much easier to see in the dry season. The cooler weather means that you sit on the shore to warm up. In the hot rainy season of the tropical north of Queensland, crocodiles tend to cool off in the water, which makes them more difficult to see
  • Weather - try to choose a sunny day if you can. The warm sun encourages the crocodiles to get out of the water and sunbathe on the banks
  • Time of day-Most crocodile river cruises on the Daintree plan their trips so that the likelihood of spitting a crocodile is maximized. I would say, don't worry too much about timing. However, ebb is a better time to discover crocodiles because the banks are exposed.
